CLASSROOM Communicore Building, Room C3-17
COURSE DESCRIPTION This foundational course provides the student with the opportunity to critically appraise and synthesize emerging trends in health science. Emphasis is on concepts, theories, and research tools related to the state of the science in nursing and health research. Course content focuses on the integration of new technological and conceptual approaches to interdisciplinary knowledge development.
COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Evaluate the research-based evidence for selected nursing focal area. 2. Identify gaps toward which to direct future nursing research efforts. 3. Analyze research designs and methods appropriate for advancing nursing science. 4. Demonstrate how to conduct a systematic literature review 5. Examine innovative approaches for advancing knowledge. 6. Integrate individual focal area into the context of current nursing and health science.
COURSE SCHEDULE This course will be held in person on Mondays from 1:00 – 3:30 pm in Communicore Building, Room C3-17 and is facilitated by E-Learning in Canvas, the course management system that you will use for this course. E-Learning in Canvas is accessed by using your Gatorlink account name and password at http://elearning.ufl.edu/. There are several tutorials and student help links on the E-Learning login site. If you have technical questions call the UF Computer Help Desk at 352-392-HELP or send email to [email protected]. It is important that you regularly check your Gatorlink account email for College and University wide information and the course E-Learning site for announcements and notifications. Course websites are generally made available on the Friday before the first day of classes.
TOPICAL OUTLINE 1. NIH research priorities 2. Systematic approaches to identify and evaluate a nursing focal area 3. Synthesizing the scientific literature 4. Research designs and methods in the science of nursing and health 5. Exemplars of emerging and innovative areas of nursing science 6. Methods for reporting systematic literature review
TEACHING METHODS Lectures, videos, reading assignments, team-based learning cooperative (in class quizzes and exercises), and individual and cooperative writing assignments.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES Readings, on-line lectures, literature review table development, group manuscript development, individual synthesis paper, and peer evaluation. Students are expected to: a) Complete preparatory activities (readings, on-line lectures, individual literature review table) and follow-up activities for the weekly in class-exercises; b) Attend and actively participate in the in-class exercises each week; and c) Complete individual writing assignment.
EVALUATION METHODS/COURSE GRADE CALCULATION Evaluation is based upon achievement of course objectives. Students receive points for in class quizzes, seminar attendance and for participation in class that reflects application of online lecture content and reading assignments, for active participation in and contributions to the team based learning activities and written assignments.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF ASSIGNMENTS
In Class Discussion: D Each quiz will be evaluated for accuracy.
Literature Review Tables: Using the course template table and independent critical review of the strengths and weaknesses of the research reported in the assigned articles, each student is expected to prepare a literature review table for the designated articles. The table will be graded for (1) evidence of critical application of theory and research methods, (2) interpretation of all findings, (3) accuracy, and (4) completeness. The due date and time for submission of the table. Tables submitted late will receive an automatic 50% reduction in possible points.
Manuscript: Each learner will prepare a literature review manuscript for submission to a professional journal. The manuscript is expected to be focused on a discrete area of nursing science within one of the course themes (health promotion, symptom science, informatics, or palliative care), present a critical evaluation of the research-based evidence for the selected nursing focal area, include at least one gap toward which to direct future nursing research efforts, present a critical analysis of the research designs and methods appropriate for advancing nursing science, include analysis of the innovative approaches that have been used for advancing knowledge, be consistent with the journal’s author guidelines (provided with the manuscript submitted to course faculty), include all the information suggested by one of the recognized literature review guidelines (e.g., PRISMA), be double spaced, 1 inch margins and a length of 20 pages maximum (inclusive of text, references, tables, figures; and exclusive of literature review table, title page, and abstract), and include information in the results section about the qualifications of and the nature of the institutional environment of the authorship team’s, first and last authors at minimum, to conduct/facilitate the reported research. describe the relevance of the learner’s dissertation research topic area to one of four areas of nursing science (health promotion, symptom science, informatics, or palliative care). Include plans for publishing a literature review given the status of prior reviews and contributions you think you will make to literature synthesis before you complete your dissertation proposal. The due date and time for submission of the group manuscript are listed in the weekly schedule. Manuscripts submitted late will receive an automatic 10% reduction in possible points.
Peer Evaluations: Each student will be expected to provide a review of students’ contributions to the class, 1 – 2 times during the semester. The format will be made available on the course website.
