JOB TITLE: Chief Executive

RESPONSIBLE TO: The Chair of the Board and, through the Chair, the Board of Trustees.

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Staff, Volunteers and all resources

LOCATION: Birmingham

HOURS OF WORK: This is a full time post (37 hours per week), hours to be worked on a flexible basis to achieve the objectives of the role.

JOB PURPOSE AND ROLE

You will provide leadership, strategic direction and operational management for Age UK Birmingham. You will advise and inform the Board of Trustees to set strategic direction and jointly create a vision for success that you will communicate to staff, volunteers and stakeholders.

You will report regularly to the Board on opportunities, risks and progress towards the strategic objectives, and you will ensure full accountability to funders and regulators. You will explore opportunities for further development of the organisation, our programmes and services, and you will build collaborative working arrangements and external partnerships. You will promote the organisation externally and raise awareness of issues of concern to older people.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Strategic Planning

Advise and support the Board and Directors in setting the vision and strategic priorities for the Charity, ensuring strategy is informed by the funding environment for charities and the changing health and social care landscape.

Provide effective leadership, management and direction for the Charity to achieve its strategic objectives, reporting regularly to the Board on progress and on future development opportunities.

1 Governance and accountability

Undertake the role of Company Secretary, ensuring that the Charity and its Trading subsidiary comply with all relevant regulatory and legal requirements, including Companies House and the Charity Commission.

Undertake the role of Approved Person to maximise covenanted income to the Charity from the Trading subsidiary, ensuring the Trading programme is fully compliant with standards set by the Financial Conduct Authority and Age UK Enterprises.

Maintain awareness of relevant policy, political and legislative changes in relation to older people and the role of Third Sector organisations in order to ensure the Board and Charity as a whole are well informed and able to respond appropriately.

Advise and support the Board in its regular assessment of risk and be responsible for the implementation of the risk management strategy and action plans.

External Relationships Act as ambassador for Age UK Birmingham, promoting its work and campaigns to influence key policy makers and to ensure the voices of older people are heard.

Develop strong working relationships with private, public and voluntary sector agencies, identifying opportunities for collaborative working to jointly address the needs of older people.

Work proactively to achieve the objectives of the Age UK Brand Partnership Agreement.

Service delivery Ensure the Charity acts as a resource and effective source of information for older people, their family and carers and for key agencies working within the city.

Ensure that a range of services and programmes are delivered and developed to meet the needs and aspirations of older people across the city.

Ensure that policy and service development recommendations reflect learning emerging from consultations with older people and from research, commissioning, grant making activities and experience at local level.

Ensure that effective monitoring, evaluation and reporting systems are in place to achieve full accountability to the Board, funders and regulators, and ensure quality standards are maintained.

Ensure that support is provided to older people's groups in the area and that individual older people and older people's groups are enabled to make their own voices heard.

Financial Management and Income Generation In collaboration with the Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GP), develop financial strategies which strengthen the organisation’s long term financial sustainability.

2 Work with the Board, Auditors and Managers to ensure effective financial management systems are in place and operating effectively.

Work with the Board and Managers to maximise income through bids, service tenders, grant applications and unrestricted income,

Human Resources Ensure effective internal leadership, performance management, recruitment, appraisal, and training for staff, and for volunteers.

Ensure all staff and volunteers work to achieve the objectives of Age UK Birmingham’s Equality and Diversity Policy, ensuring that in the delivery of advice, services, and support there is no discrimination on grounds of age, colour, disability, ethnic origin, gender, marital status, nationality, race, religious belief or sexual orientation Ensure all staff and volunteers maintain up to date knowledge of Age UK Birmingham’s Safeguarding Adults Policy and be alert to any incidents of potential abuse of vulnerable individuals, taking action under the terms of the Policy to prevent abuse of adults at risk Ensure all staff and volunteers abide by the health and safety guidelines of Age UK Birmingham and share responsibility for own safety and that of colleagues and to fulfil their duties as outlined under Age UK Birmingham’s Health and Safety Policy

Other Duties Undertake such other duties in relation to the work and functioning of Age UK Birmingham as may be reasonably required by the Board of Trustees.

1. Qualifications Senior management qualification, Application Form degree level or equivalent

2. Experience 3 years experience of providing Application Form leadership and strategic direction in a comparable organisation 5 years experience of managing the delivery of a diverse range of services
