MASTER'S THESIS AT THE SECTION OF CHEMISTRY

AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

INSCRIPTION

STUDENT

- Has the choice of advisor (professor or MER) linked to ISIC laboratories where he/she plans to complete the Master's thesis if enough place is available.

- Presents himself to the advisor of his choice during the previous semester. The advisor gives him a Master's thesis subject. The student together with the advisor fill up the inscription form at http://sb.epfl.ch/op/edit/page-121149.html

- Brings the inscription form to the Secrétariat SCGC (BCH 3303/3312).

Deadline : 25th November 2016 (for the Master's thesis from 20th February 2017 to 23rd June 2017 or 20th February 2017 to 18th August 2017).

- Fill up the official inscription on IS-Academia following the usual deadlines given by the SAC (Registrar's office) and brings it to the Secrétariat SCGC(BCH 3303/3312).

ADVISOR

- Chooses a subject in a domain accepted by the Section which allows to judge the student's aptitudes to execute a research work, to evaluate the collected results and to present the results in a report.

- Proposes a project's title and the description on the form.

DURING THE MASTER'S THESIS

STUDENT

- Works in the advisor's laboratories during 4 months. The student can ask for a key to have access to the laboratories.

- Attends the seminars of the research's group in which the student is involved.

ADVISOR

- Hosts the student on the first day of the semester and gives the initial directive.

1 - Advises the candidate.

- Chooses one or several independent experts in agreement with the art. 32 of the Ordonnance sur le contrôle des études, to evaluate the Master's thesis.

AT THE END OF MASTER'S THESIS STUDENT

- Confidential Master's thesis

- prepares the following Master's thesis copies : 1 copy for the Section, 1 copy for the advisor, 1 copy for each expert and 1 personal copy. Prepares a poster of his/her Master's thesis.

- brings 3 copies signed on the conclusions'page to the Secrétariat SCGC.

- Non-confidential Master's thesis

- Uploads an electronic version of the Master's thesis on Is-Academia and sends a .pdf of the Master's thesis to the thesis director and an email to confirm to the Secretariat de la Section de chimie et de genie chimique [email protected].

- Prepares a poster of his/her Master's thesis.

Confidential and non-confidential Master's thesis

- Brings the poster of the Master's thesis together with the thesis reports to the Secretariat de la Section de chimie et de genie chimique.

- Approx. 2 or 3 weeks later, the student defends her/his work during an oral examination of his work during a seminar organized by the advisor or by the institute.

- Deadline : date transmitted by the SAC.

- The poster exhibition takes place in October 2017.

SECRETARIAT OF THE SECTION

- If the Master's thesis is confidential, stamps the EPFL seal on the first page and on the conclusions'page, stamps the date of reception of the Master's thesis on the first page and informs the SAC.

- Transmits two copies to the advisor, one for her/him and the other one for the expert.

- One copy is kept for archive at the Secrétariat SCGC.

- If the Master's thesis is non-confidential, it is kept for archive and then transmitted to the central Library.

2 ADVISOR

- Judges the work with the expert(s) regarding : a) quality of experimental work, b) quality of the thesis, c) quality of the public presentation.

- Chooses the expert in agreement with the art. 32 of the Ordonnance sur le contrôle des études and chooses the date of the oral examination. Informs the SAC.

- Communicates the mark to the SAC : [email protected]

MASTER'S THESIS IN INDUSTRY/ABROAD STUDENT

- Has the possibility to perform the Master's thesis outside EPFL.

- To be allowed, the student must find an advisor among the ISIC professors.

- Follows the general directives.

ADVISOR

- Is officially supervising the Master's thesis and will preside jury.

- Verifies the level of the proposed subject by the partner and follows up the progress of the project.

- Informs the partner about EPFL requirements and interferes with the partner in case of problem.
