BRUCE ESTES 12 RIPPETEAU FOR HIS PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS, 13 ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE IN 14 SOUTH CAROLINA. 15 16 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 17 Representatives are grateful for the twentyfive years of service that 18 Bruce Estes Rippeteau has given to educational research in South 19 Carolina; and 20 21 Whereas, having grown up in Watertown, New York, he studied 22 archaeology at the University of Nebraska where he met his 23 beloved wife, Sandra, and earned a bachelor’s degree; and 24 25 Whereas, in 1970, Bruce Rippeteau earned a master’s degree from 26 the University of Arizona, and later earned a doctorate in 1973 27 from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio; and 28 29 Whereas, he began his teaching career as an associate professor in 30 the archaeology department at the State University of New York at 31 Oneida and moved his family to Columbia in 1984 to serve as the 32 director of the University of South Carolina Institute of 33 Archaeology and Anthropology; and 34 35 Whereas, a tenured research professor at the University of South 36 Carolina from 1984 to 2004, Dr. Rippeteau served as director of 37 the institute until 2002 and as state archaeologist from 1984 to 38 2000; and 39 40 Whereas, he served from 1986 to 1992 with the USS Monitor 41 Archaeological Documentation Committee, and from 1995 to

[3875] 2 1 2003, he served on the raising and conservation project of the H. 2 L. Hunley Historic Confederate Submarine; and 3 4 Whereas, representing the State of South Carolina, he served as a 5 member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 6 Marine Sanctuaries, and USS Monitor Committee from 1986 to 7 1992; and 8 9 Whereas, Dr. Rippeteau was appointed a member and elected 10 chairman of the South Carolina Heritage Trust, for which he 11 provided a decade of service; and 12 13 Whereas, in 1997, he cofounded the Celebrate Freedom 14 Foundation, serving as its president from 1998 to 2008, and is now 15 president emeritus; and 16 17 Whereas, his contributions to the early understanding, application, 18 and use of radiocarbon dating led to his election as a national 19 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of 20 Science; and 21 22 Whereas, from 2000 to 2003, Dr. Rippeteau served as vice 23 chairman of the Columbia, SC, Jim HamiltonL.B. Owens Airport 24 during construction of the airport’s new terminal; and 25 26 Whereas, he served as the president of the Rotary Club of 27 Columbia, the twentieth largest of thirtyone thousand Rotary Clubs 28 worldwide, and was awarded the International Presidential 29 Citation; and 30 31 Whereas, an elected national fellow of the Explorers Club, he 32 brought his passion for exploration to the State of South Carolina 33 through service to the Greater Piedmont Chapter of the historic 34 Explorers Club in a host of roles, including chapter chair; and 35 36 Whereas, after a long and distinguished career in the Palmetto 37 State, Dr. Rippeteau now resides in Nebraska, to the delight of his 38 grandchildren, and continues to collaborate with and support 39 numerous projects here in South Carolina; and 40 41 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 42 Representatives are grateful for the significant role that Dr. Bruce

[3875] 3 1 Estes Rippeteau has played in the educational, preservation, and 2 public sectors of our great State. Now, therefore, 3 4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 5 6 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 7 by this resolution, recognize and commend Dr. Bruce Estes 8 Rippeteau for his professional contributions, accomplishments, and 9 community service in South Carolina. 10 11 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 12 Dr. Bruce Estes Rippeteau. 13 XX 14
