Dear Mr. Shockley:

It is with great enthusiasm that I am seeking the English/Language Arts secondary teaching position in your school. I believe that my instructional abilities along with my content knowledge and persevering work ethic would greatly complement Avon Community Schools’ philosophy of “educating all students…regardless of their abilities, race, color, national origin or creed." I too believe that in addition to education, we have a responsibility to care for each individual student, physically, emotionally, and morally.

I am currently finishing my coursework at Indiana University, and I expect to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in English/Language Arts Secondary Education and my Indiana state teaching credentials in 2006. It is my belief that education is the foundation for success for young students, and as an educator, I hope to motivate students to the best of their abilities, while challenging them to take that extra step that will enable them to achieve things they may have never thought possible. These beliefs have been shaped through student teaching, other field experiences, and various work and volunteer activities.

Through my student teaching experience, I learned valuable skills in classroom management and student engagement with third and sixth grade students. A portion of my time was devoted to devising a unit plan for our major novel of study, and I was able to create activities and lessons that enhanced students’ knowledge, critical thinking skills, and creativity. Observing my students’ engagement and enthusiasm for literature reaffirmed my desire to teach. In addition to teaching, I am also currently the freshman basketball coach at Avon High School.

I believe that these experiences and others have assisted me in my continuous journey of becoming an effective, well rounded teacher.
