6. Skiing News and Events

Elvis and Metro first Snozone Event a great success!

The eager adventurers, volunteers and ELVis and Metro staff arrived bright and early to take the train from Euston Station to Milton Keynes where a mini bus awaited to transport them to the Snozone Centre.

On arrival, all participants kitted up in their ski jackets and bottoms either ready to hit the ski slope for sledging, or skiing in their allocated groups. One participant said: “I just wanted to thank you for a great day yesterday. It was all very well organised and great fun. It was fab having my own volunteer all day and she was helpful and fun.”

“Ketan and I both had an amazing time and everyone has inspired us to give it another go! We can't wait for the next event!” said another volunteer.

Masuma Ali, ELVis CEO said: “It was great to see that the event appealed to complete beginners to more advanced skiers. Huge thank you to all staff, volunteers and Snozone Milton Keynes for helping to make the day a success!”

Ian Francis, Metro Blind Sport Development Officer added: "A fun, tiring but really rewarding experience, well done to everyone who took part and supported this event. Many skiers keen to return and develop their skills. Thank you to our partners East London Vision for all their time and energy behind the scenes to make these events happen!” - Link to full story on our website: http://bit.ly/2lpBfNu

Ski for Light 2017

Metro Blind Sport member, Janice, flew out on Friday 3rd February to take part in Ski for Light, finishing a week later on Sunday 13th February 2017. If you are wanting to learn to Cross Country Ski and improve your technique, Janice recommends Ski for Light is the place to go. In her own words...... "We were at 7-8 thousand feet, which makes you a bit breathless, it certainly helps if you can arrive with some level of fitness. You are expected to ski every day while you are there and the guides I found to be mostly excellent.

The social side of things is good too, with over 100 blind skiers, each with a guide, and a few sit skiers too. Ski for Light is held at a different venue each year, often returning to Colorado, so the terrain can be mixed. There is varied entertainment in the evenings, on one evening, it was dedicated to The Wild West, and as well as Square Dancing.

If you are interested in going for Ski for Light next year check out their website: http://www.sfl.org Ski for Light 2018 Date: 21 Jan to 28 Jan.

We will be skiing at Tahoe-Donner Cross http://www.tahoedonner.com/cross-country/ Country ski area in Truckee, California, and staying at the Nugget Hotel Resort http://www.nuggetcasinoresort.com in Sparks, Nevada"

Good luck and break a leg to the large party of Metro cross country skiers going to Norway on the 26th March 2017 for a week, many of whom this is their first time. We look forward to receiving stories and/or photos of your snowy adventures!
