7Math 1- Module 8 Study Guide

7Math 1- Module 8 Study Guide Use this guide to take notes as you read each lesson in module 8. On the left side of your two-column notes, copy all vocabulary and other information you need. On the right side, write down detailed examples. Remember, you can use your notes on assessments, module tests and segment exams.

Lesson 8.07 Surface Area of Prisms Dimension: A direction of measurement Example from Lesson

One-Dimensional: Line Example from Lesson

Line has length

Two-Dimensional: 2-D figures exist on a flat plane. Example from Lesson

Rectangle has length & Width: No Height.

Three-Dimensional: 3-D figures exist in space. Example from Lesson

Length, width and height (or depth)

Polyhedron (plural: polyhedral)

Face

Edge

Examples from the lesson: Dodecahedron: Obelisk:

32 faces: pentagons and hexagons 12 faces 4 quadrilateral faces topped with 4 Soccer Ball triangular faces.

Prism: Example from Lesson

Nets: Example from Lesson:

Rectangular-Prism Cube Triangular-Prism

The net is made up of three pairs of Identical rectangles. The net is made up of six identical The net is made up of two triangles and squares. Three rectangles. Surface Area of a 3-D figure: Example from Lesson:

Surface Area of a cube: Example from Lesson: What is the surface area of the cube?

2

2 SA = 6s SA = 6s

Surface Area of a c rectangular prism: Example from Lesson: What is the surface area of the rectangular prism? SA = 2LW + 2LH + 2WH

SA = 2LW + 2LH + 2WH

Remember! Surface Area tells us how much it takes to cover the surface of an object. How many square feet it takes to cover or make an object.

The unit of measure for surface area is square. For example we might say, the surface area of the prism is 32 square inches. 2 SA = 32 in

Remember, the area of a triangle is found using the formula : Surface Area of a triangular prism: Example from Lesson: What is the surface area of the triangular prism? Use a net to solve for surface area:

Surface Area of a triangular prism formula: Example from Lesson: What is the surface area of the triangular prism? SA = area of two triangle bases + area of 3 rectangle Use the formula: SA = 2B + PH faces. SA = 2B + PH

B: The area of the triangle base. P: Perimeter of the triangle base. H: Height of the prism. The distance from one base to the other.

Step 1: Solve for the area of the triangle: B Step 2: Solve for the perimeter of the triangle: P

Step 1: Solve for the height of the prism: H Step 1: Use the formula: SA = 2B + PH The height of the prism is the distance between the triangle bases. H = 10

Surface Area of a triangular prism when the bases are not right triangles.

Step 1: Solve for the area of the triangle: B Step 2: Solve for the perimeter of the triangle: P

Step 1: Solve for the height of the prism: H Step 1: Use the formula: SA = 2B + PH

The surface area is 620 meters squared.
