Aboriginal Studies:

Aboriginal Studies 10 (open to students in Grade 10, 11, 12): This course welcomes all of you who are interested in delving deeper into:  Political and economic organizations of Aboriginal cultures (Aboriginal Studies 10)  Cultural change as it relates to the Métis, treaties, legislation and schooling (Aboriginal Studies 20)  Aboriginal rights, land claims and self-governance (Aboriginal Studies 30) These courses are experiential in nature (including field trips and presentations by Elders and the community), and build understandings of Aboriginal peoples of Canada and Indigenous peoples of the world in the context of history and contemporary issues. This course will be offered by Ms. Lutz, Lester B. Pearson High School’s FNMI Learning Coach.

Note | Aboriginal Studies can be used as partial fulfillment of the CBE International Certificate. Note | Aboriginal Studies 30 can be used as an entrance requirement for post-secondary applications in Alberta. Athletics:

Leadership 10/20 (open to students in Grade 10, 11, 12) is growing to become one of Pearson’s pillars of excellence. It is an inclusive program that provides students with:

 the fun of team building with the meaning of service to create memorable experiences that last a lifetime.

 enhanced teamwork, communication, conflict resolution and project management skills.

 a great deal of character development through team building and self-reflection.

 Students will be expected to be available at lunch and after school to support key leadership events at LBP and in the community.

 Maturity, the ability to work independently and a high level of commitment are essential character traits that must be consistently demonstrated to be successful in leadership. Sports Medicine 10 allows students to become familiar with general health and wellness fundamentals, as well as prevention, immediate care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Students explore the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. Students will be given the opportunity to learn basic taping and wrapping techniques. A major requirement is completing practicum hours outside of scheduled school time with various athletic teams.

Sports Performance 10 provides students with an intense understanding of athletics on an academic and a practical level. The course focuses on an academic understanding of your entire body mechanics to achieve optimal health and performance. In 2016-17, we hope to offer a Sports Performance Class for girls only if demand exists.

Yoga 15/25 (open to students in Grade 10, 11, 12)  perform the postures (asanas), breathing techniques, and relaxation techniques of yoga practice  develop personal management skills and the knowledge to benefit personally from a regular individualized yoga program  acquire and apply a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology relevant to yoga, and understand the historical roots of yoga as an art, science, and philosophy COMPLEMENTARY COURSES FOR GRADE 10 STUDENTS: FULL DESCRIPTIONS (2017-18) 3 Career and Technology Studies (CTS)

Animation 10: This course focuses on developing fundamental skills essential to pursue a career in the 2D and 3D Animation Industry. Students will learn:  how to create effective visual compositions. (Com 1005 Visual Composition)  manual sketching, drawing and modeling techniques. (Des 1010 Sketching, Drawing and Modeling)  the fundamentals of vector and raster graphics. (Com 1035 Graphic Tools)  a variety of animation principles and techniques. (Com1145 Animation 1)  project design and management skills that are personally relevant (Com 1910 Project)

Business Management 10 is a unique course that offers students an opportunity to explore business through the eyes of a retailer. Learning both Marketing and Accounting skills, business students are provided with hands on learning opportunities that range from working in "The Snack Shack" (The school store) to learning how to complete the Accounting books for a company. Every job you can think of is part of a business, learning how a business works, promotes itself and completes in finances will help you in any Career you would ever want.

Computer Game Coding 10: Have you ever wondered how the Internet and computer apps worked? Whether it’s a beautiful website, an immersive choose-your-own adventure story, or a keyboard-mashing video game, in this introductory course you will learn how to design and build it! Through a combination of in-class lessons and challenges, online learning environments, and integration with your core curricular areas, you will learn:  Secrets of how the Internet and World Wide Web work  Professional HTML5 and CSS3 techniques for beautiful and interactive web design  Interactive game or story design by developing coding and problem solving skills  How to use the web intelligently and safely to find information  How to document and manage a programming project from conception to delivery

Construction 10:  learn about skills, techniques, safe tool and equipment operating practices and procedures for use in cabinet making and residential construction  read drawings, integrate skills and develop confidence in current construction methods while working on construction projects

Culinary Foods 10: The Culinary Arts program focuses on the diversity of the food service industry. At the introductory level students will be introduced to working and preparing ‘large volume’ food in a commercial kitchen. Additionally students will be required to present and serve food prepared daily in the school cafeteria.

Fashion Courses :

1. Cosplay Couture 10: This course provides opportunities for students to increase their knowledge of the costume design while learning to sew.  Students will explore a variety of characters (Anime, Video Games, Comic Books or Animation) and recreate the total look of their selected character.  Students might also choose to analyze different costuming requirements.  Students gain an understanding of the safe use and care of sewing and pressing equipment, and layout and construction methods of garments. Students who possess initiative, creativity, a strong work ethic, and the desire to learn new skills will find success in this course. Students purchase all required materials and supplies

2. Fashion Studies 10: This is an introductory course covering basic sewing techniques, both hand sewing and using the sewing machine and sergers. Students will design and manufacture simple clothing and accessories. Students will complete 5 modules, four already selected, and one of their own choice. Cost: Students are required to buy materials and supplies for clothing project.

3. Textile Arts 10: This course is a combination of Fashions and the elements and principles of Art.  Students will use the elements and principals of design to create fabric inspired works of art.  Students will develop basic sewing techniques, both hand and sewing machines and possible sergers .  Students will learn how to use fabric, ribbon, trim, lace and notions to make artistic usable projects. Students who possess initiative, creativity, a strong work ethic, and the desire to learn new skills will find success in this course. Students may need to purchase materials and supplies depending on their artistic project idea.

Graphic Design 10 offers opportunities for students to explore all facets of graphic design. Students will gain:  A working knowledge and technical expertise of the design process is developed through the application of visual graphic and typography based activities  Practice and experience in creating visual images using illustration, typographic design, print methods, photography, and Adobe CC computer software programs.  Exploration will be given to the methods used by professional graphic designers to influence a target audience in supporting specific ideas and or products.  a professional portfolio to support their learning and knowledge, as well as to prepare them for application to a college or university design program.  focus on basic rights, responsibilities and legal issues relating to personal relationships  explore the legal relationship between government and the citizen with an emphasis on property law, dispute resolution, small business law, controversy and change, and criminal law

Personal Foods 10 provides students with the opportunity to:  learn about food production, food preparation and meal planning  understand nutrition and healthy food choices, food costs and economics, and safe food handling techniques  participate in cooking, baking, and food presentation for personal enjoyment and for the food service industry

Photography 10: Students will explore a new world of seeing and develop knowledge and technical skills of the camera, as a perspective tool. Exploration will be given to the work of inspirational photographers, both past and present and to the variety of photographic fields one may pursue as a photographic artist or as a commercial photographer. Students are provided with opportunities to explore all facets of photography, with an emphasis on theoretical and hands on experiences.

Pre-Architectural and Industrial Design 10: This course introduces students to the basics of creative and technical 2D, 3D and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) as it relates to both architecture and industrial Design using software such as Revit Architecture and Inventor. Students will learn to problem solve by applying the Design Process and the Principles and Elements of Design. A large-scale plotter and 3D printer will be used to output solutions to projects.

Pre-Engineering 10: Ever wanted to make something real? Then you may be a Maker. Whether it’s a robotic vacuum, articulating plastic jewelry, or electronic Simon Says, designing these things is ultimately a process of engineering. Students learn basic skills related to creating real-world objects as an introduction to many engineering careers, while earning CTS credits in the following areas: ● Computer-aided design ● Computer programming ● Robotics/Mechatronics ● Electronics fabrication and circuit design This dynamic, multidisciplinary program will provide practical hands-on experience in interactive technical lab environments, complemented with virtual online simulations. You will investigate fundamental engineering concepts including CAD Design, electronics, robotics/mechatronics, and computer programming. You will learn to design, construct and program robots and robotic systems. A strong understanding of Grade 9 Math and Science is highly recommended to ensure students have the pre-requisite skills in this fast paced learning environment. Enrichment in Science and Math

Biology 20: Our Science 10 students will start their Grade 10 year examining biology. Thus, they may choose to take Biology 20 in the second semester as one of their eight courses. The course is described in the CBE common registration guide:  engage in examining interactions of living systems with each other and their environment  Biology 20 emphasizes energy and matter exchange  enhance scientific literacy and prepare you for post-secondary programs*

Math 15: This course will be taken alongside the regularly scheduled full year math program. It is intended for students who had a difficult time mastering the junior high math curriculum (Earned “1” and “2” on their Jr. High Report Card.) The program aims to improve student mastery of mathematical skills, concepts and ideas. Students will extend their knowledge beyond performing routine operations and will be encouraged to explore a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts through critical thinking and exploration exercises. Students will collaborate with their teacher and peers in exploring multiple ways to solve problems.

Science Enrichment - Production Field Operations (PFO) - This dual credit program is a partnership between SAIT, Cenovus Enegy and the CBE. It provides students with foundational knowledge in oil and gas field operations. It includes an overview of exploration, discovery, fluid, characteristics, well and field operations and hazards, basic instrumentation, and basic economics. Upon successful completion of three Locally Developed Courses, students will earn a SAIT Certificate in Production Field Operations. Contact Ms. Lieske or Mr. Eng for further details.

Science Enrichment - Water / Wastewater - This dual credit program is a partnership between NAIT and the CBE. It provides students with Entry Level Training in water distribution and collection, water treatment and disinfection, safety, legislation and the environment. Students earn three credits in work experience, and are able to write a government exam necessary to work in this field as a Water/Wastewater Technician. Fine and Performing Arts Art 10: In this course, students will: COMPLEMENTARY COURSES FOR GRADE 10 STUDENTS: FULL DESCRIPTIONS (2017-18) 7

 practice and refine drawing, sketching, and composition skills and techniques  extend knowledge and familiarity of design elements and principles to develop  personal style in two and three dimensional images  use art criticism to analyse and evaluate your work and the work of others  at higher levels: investigate technology‘s impact on the artist‘s intentions and  production; question sources of images that are personally relevant

Band 15: In band students will work as members of a team to learn and perform a variety of music ranging from concert band classics to contemporary movie music. As part of this process students will develop the skills necessary to interpret music at a high level and even to compose their own music.  apply personal practice strategies in an ensemble setting  interpret select music creatively and critically  rehearse repertoire and perform publicly with a large group or ensemble  explore and apply elements of quality performance and performance etiquette

Choir 10: In choir students will lend their voice to the group as the ensemble learns and performs a wide range of repertoire from the Renaissance to today’s greatest hits. For those who wish, opportunities for leadership through solo work are presented frequently.  apply and extend personal practice strategies in a choir  rehearse repertoire and perform publicly in a choir  explore and apply elements of quality performance and performance etiquette

Dance 15:  improve creative expression, self-discipline, body awareness, motor coordination, and all aspects of physical fitness such as strength, endurance, balance, agility, flexibility and grace  think creatively and express thoughts and feelings in physical forms  may include jazz (including but not limited to swing, classical, funk, hip hop …) tap, modern / contemporary, creative, ethno cultural (including but not limited to Latin, African, Indo-Asian, Celtic …), choreography, and dance history  develop confidence and stage presence through performance opportunities during the courses

Drama 10:  develop performance and technical skills in eight dramatic disciplines (movement, speech, improvisation, acting, theatre studies, technical theatre design, playwriting and directing)  develop your creativity and work with others to bring dramatic situations to life and become more confident in yourself and in collaboration  demonstrate increased sophistication and refinement of skills as you advance

Musical Theatre 15 provides students with the opportunity to:  provide an interactive environment of integrated study in dance, drama, technical theatre and vocal music for students who seek the challenge of working through the creative process to performance  develop fundamental skills and discipline to become a proficient performer and artist in musical theatre  evaluate and effectively reflect on your personal work and the work of your peers in live theatre production

Technical Theatre 15:  offer you an opportunity to explore and experience the skills necessary to realize a theatrical and public performance  develop and demonstrate competencies in sound, lighting, set, costume, properties, make-up, and stage management  explore career opportunities by connecting with professional theatre communities

Vocal Jazz 15:  build understanding of repertoire and techniques involved in performance of vocal jazz through the exploration, practice and performance of vocal jazz  apply the diverse aspects and components of vocal jazz  develop and apply theoretical understanding of rhythmic patterns, choral textures and harmonies that are specific to the jazz genre Second Languages:

French 10-3Y: As you expand your horizons in one of Canada‘s official languages, you will enhance your speaking, listening, reading, and writing competencies in French. While creating oral and written presentations, you will learn to plan, elaborate and justify your opinions. You will cultivate a deep appreciation of French language and culture across the globe.

Punjabi 10-3Y: In this course you will enhance your speaking, listening, reading, and writing competencies in Punjabi. While creating oral and written presentations, you will learn to plan, elaborate and justify your opinions. You will cultivate a deep appreciation of Punjabi language and culture across the globe. You can continue your studies in Punjabi at the 20 and 30 level.
