JANUARY/FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

SCHOOL CLOSING/DELAY - If a decision is made to close school because of weather, that announcement will be made on the following radio stations – 105.5 FM, 107.1 FM, and 1500 AM. In addition, the One Call system will be utilized. These announcements regarding school closings or delays will be made before 7:00a.m. Our school office opens at 7:30a.m. The following is the established school corporation procedure for a morning delay:

1) All bus drivers and school personnel would start their day either one or more hours later than usual. (This would also be announced on the above radio stations.) 2) School dismissal would be at the regular time. 3) School lunches would be served.

Hopefully, we will never have to implement these procedures, but if we do, you will now be prepared. You may also check our corporation web site for additional information. (www.griffith.k12.in.us) On the Griffith web site there is an option under the Information tab entitled Emergency School Closing. By clicking on this option, you can subscribe to the Emergency Closing Center (ECC). When you click on the ECC link you can sign up for e-mail notification. If there is an early closing, you will be notified by e-mail if you subscribe to this service.

HEALTH NOTICE - Living in the Northwest Indiana region brings about one certainty…dealing with winter weather. Some tips to protect your children from the cold are to dress them in warm layers, with a hat and mittens, and keep them dry. Wear waterproof boots. Make them come indoors at regular intervals and avoid overexertion. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

Exposure to very cold temperatures for prolonged periods can cause a severe condition called hypothermia, (Body temperature less than 95 F). Wet or damp clothing, an uncovered head or inadequate clothing increase chances of hypothermia. Young children are at particular risk. Symptoms include shivering, slurred speech, cold pale skin, abnormally slow breathing, loss of coordination, lethargy and fatigue. If you observe these signs, call 911 for emergency medical assistance. Do remove wet clothing and replace with warm dry covering. Apply warm compresses to the chest wall, neck and groin, but not the arms or legs. Do not rub or massage the person.

With cold temperature exposure, skin and underlying tissues may freeze, resulting in frostbite. Areas most likely affected are fingers, hands, toes, feet, nose and ears. The skin becomes white, waxy and feels numb and hard. As the body thaws, the flesh will become red and painful. If you observe these signs, you should follow these first aid procedures:

1) Get out of the cold. 2) Warm the hands by tucking them under ones arms. If the nose or ears or face is affected, warm the area by covering it with dry, gloved hands. Remove any wet clothing. 3) Immerse frozen areas in warm, not hot, water or gently wrap in warm blankets. 4) DO NOT RUB AFFECTED AREA. NEVER RUB SNOW ON FROSTBITEN SKIN. 5) Get emergency medical help.

Traveling during the winter can be dangerous. Allow extra time and monitor weather conditions carefully and adhere to travel advisories. Keep a winter storm kit in your car. This should include blankets, food, flares, gloves, chains and/or sand, and first aid supplies.

Check out our Health & Wellness page on the Griffith web site. It is under Departments where information can be found on MRSA, lice, meningitis, and state immunization requirements.

Also, please remember to sign a permission slip for all medications that are to be administered at school.

Principal’s Press

Dear Parents,

I have listed below some helpful hints on how to help your child become more successful at school. Please understand that we are a partnership, and when school and home partner together, student success will be evident.

On a Daily Basis:  Check your Child’s Planner. Most teachers require a parent signature nightly as part of the communication of the classroom’s expectations for homework or additional important information. Please be sure you are checking each night what your child needs to do for school the following day. If they do not have any written homework, please have your children read. I have listed below the approximate times students should be reading per grade level. Kindergarten-15-20 minutes with parent First Grade-10 minutes independently Second Grade-20 minutes independently Third Grade-30 minutes independently Fourth Grade-40 minutes independently Fifth Grade-45-50 minutes independently Sixth Grade-40-60 minutes independently On a Weekly Basis:  Log into Power School  Logging into Power School each week will keep you updated on grades recorded in a teacher’s grade book and provide you with an overall percentage of your child’s progress in each content area. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher before or after school with questions or concerns. Together we can make a difference in your child’s education!

Mrs. Neeley
