Catalog Description: This is a second course in algebra for students who have completed an elementary algebra course. The topics covered include polynomials, rational functions, linear equations and inequalities, absolute value inequalities, exponents and radicals, quadratic equations, relations and functions, systems of equations, and applications. Prerequisite: MATH 095, within two years, satisfactory placement exam, or SAT/ACT score. Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

 Solve linear equations and inequalities

 Graph linear equations and inequalities, relations, and functions

 Solve systems of linear equations and inequalities

 Perform operations with polynomials including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and factoring

 Simplify expressions with radicals and rational exponents

 Solve quadratic equations and inequalities

 Solve a variety of applied problems involving linear, quadratic, rational, and polynomial expressions Measurements of Learning Outcomes: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of achieving the learning outcomes in homework assignments, tests, and the final exam. Required Materials:  Textbook: Intermediate Algebra, 3rd ed. by Ignacio Bello and Fran Hopf. ISBN: 9780077276263

 Scientific calculator

 Internet access Method of Instruction: This course is an online class; therefore, all of the materials, homework assignments, tests, and the final exam are done on a computer with Internet access. Attendance Policy: It is highly recommended that students watch the class video lectures, accessed through mathzone.com. Course Requirements: Upon completion of this course, students should demonstrate their ability to formulate mathematical concepts, graph and solve linear inequalities, linear and quadratic equations. Students are expected to apply the course knowledge to resolve actual problems which exist in daily life. This course is the prerequisite for students to advance to MATH 120 and MATH 126. How to Turn in Assignments: First, you need to register for this class at http://www.mathzone.com. Then you may start to turn in your assignments. In order to register for the class, you need to have a registration code, either included with your textbook or purchased from the textbook publisher’s website. You also need the class section code, which is 486-E8-DB8. For details, please refer to the Student Quick Start Guide – Math Zone posted on WebCampus. Taking a Test or the Final Exam: Elko students need to take all of the tests and the final exam at the testing center of the Academic Success Center, located in the EIT building. The phone number for the testing center is 753-2149. Students at GBC’s branch campuses need to contact their local administration office to take all tests and the final exam. All other students need to take their tests and the final exam at a nearby higher education institution (TMCC, UNR, UNLV, CSN) or designated location. You must let your course instructor know how to contact your proctor by Friday, September 9, so the proctor can get the password for the tests and the final exam. Please note it is YOUR responsibility to take tests or the final exam at a scheduled location by posted deadlines. Please bring a photo ID with you when you are going to take the tests and the final exam. Grading Policy – Please read this very carefully: All homework assignments, tests, and the final exam must be completed through www.mathzone.com. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. You may do the assignment in each section as many times as you want before the due date, and the best score will be your score for the section. The assignments account for 30% of your grade. Grading Policy (continued): There are four tests in this course, and each one accounts for 15% of your total grade. However, the test with the lowest grade will be dropped, so the three remaining tests account for 45% of your total grade. All tests are open book and proctored, and the duration for each test is two hours. Each test will be available on Monday of the specified week, and must be completed by Friday of the specified week. You may complete and submit each test twice. The highest score will be chosen as your grade for the test. You must allow four hours between each attempt of the test. If you choose to submit just once for your test, the score on that one attempt will be your grade for the test. The score will be released once all the tests have been graded. Make-up tests will be allowed only with accepted documentation for the reason. Except for medical emergencies, other excuses might NOT be accepted in general. In order to take the make-up test, you need to notify me within 48 hours of the emergency. The final exam accounts for 20% of the total grade. The exam is also an open book, proctored test with a duration of two hours. It will be made available on Monday, December 12. The exam needs to be done by Friday, December 16. Please be aware you only have one attempt for the final exam. Your first homework assignment is to send me an email through WebCampus by 11:59 PM on Sunday, September 4. This assignment is worth 5 points, which is also worth 5% of your total grade. In your email, please include the following paragraph: “I have read the class syllabus. Assignments, tests and the final exam are done through www.mathzone.com. Deadlines of assignments, tests and the final exam are written in the syllabus. Directions for taking the proctored tests and the final exam are also written in the class syllabus.” Grades are distributed as follows: 94 – 100% A 77 – 79% C+ 60 – 63% D- 90 – 93% A- 74 – 76% C Below 60% F 87 – 89% B+ 70 – 73% C- 84 – 86 % B 67 – 69% D+ 80 – 83% B- 64 – 66% D Consult the GBC catalog for information on “I” grades and withdrawals.
