INSTRUCTOR TRAINING FOR CLIMBING AND RAPPELLING TOWERS
CAMP HANSEN – November 5 - 7, 2010 (Friday – Sunday) CAMP BROWN – November 12 – 14, 2010 (Friday-Sunday)
Troop leaders your Boy Scouts need to experience the challenge of climbing and rappelling. By having adult leaders in your troop certified as BSA Climbing and Rappelling Instructors, you will be able to use the facilities at Camp Brown and Camp Hansen to allow Boy Scouts to earn the Climbing/Rappelling Merit Badge without having to rely on instructors from other troops. Webelos Scouts can also climb, but not rappel, Cub Scouts can boulder. Notice: This course is also open to Cub Scout leaders.
Where: The Coronado Area Council will offer certification courses for Climbing/Rappelling Instructors at the Robert K. Weary Climbing Tower at Camp Brown and at the new Camp Hansen Tower.
Who: Registered leaders, at least 18 years of age, can register to take this training to be certified to operate the tower (tower operations require that a lead instructor at least 21 years old be present and in charge) when their troop, team, or crew is at Camp for a short-term campout or activity. At least two trained instructors are needed at all times to operate the tower (more may be required depending on the # of Scouts). Training is open to the first 15 leaders who register.
When: Training starts at each location at 7:00 pm Friday and ends in the late afternoon on Sunday. Participants must be present throughout the entire course time to receive the instructor certification. The BSA Climbing Instructor training syllabus will be followed. Participants must be “ready to go” at 7 p.m. The trainings end on Sunday at approximately 5pm.
Cost: $35 per person for registered leaders in the Coronado Council and $50 for others. The cost includes three meals on Saturday and two on Sunday, the book Topping Out, use of camp, climbing equipment and training materials during the weekend. There will be a cracker barrel on Friday night but dinner is not provided.
Certification: Instructor’s training will be good for two years and then you must be recertified. Instructors may be asked to also help (when they can) operate the tower for groups that do not have trained instructors or to help out at district or council events like the Order of the Arrow Spring Conclave, Cub Scout weekends, etc.
GROUP RESERVATIONS: All reservations to use the tower will be handled through the Scout Service Center. To register for this Climbing Instructor Training Course, complete this registration and return (along with your course fee) to the Coronado Area Council, PO Box 912 Salina, KS 67402-0912
