ROLLING Skill/concept development: ROLL “Select a mat. Show me different rolls on the mat starting from a balanced base and . Shape of body finishing in a balanced base.” . Change start position . How do you generate speed? What do you need to do to make a roll work? . As you roll, what shape should your Concepts: body be? 1. Curved surface area. Why? . Space . Share mats. 2. Weight transfer. Why 3. Tightly distributed mass. Why Extend – Flight and direction. “Using the whole space, run and jump except this time when you land go into a roll using a mat and finish in balance, hold for 3 seconds then repeat.“ One small mat each 1. “From standing to a balance show me how many different rolls you can do from one end of the mat to the other.”  Run, Jump and Roll to a balance  Add turn or body shape to jump.  Extend body parts on balance Show examples of sequences STATION 2

REVIEW and extend patches and points. Change. Vary points, direction of body.

“Show a balance with one patch and two points with Change balance free body parts extend as far as you can.” What happens when you extend parts?

UPSIDE DOWN SHAPE “Same again but this time experiment with body parts In peers do reciprocal headstand above your head.” Show examples, then focus on headstand. Handstand progression sheet. HEADSTAND PROGRESSION

How can you travel into another balance? Roll – tight curved surface area. Handstand to forward roll Rock weight. Use height. “Tuck, drop to roll.” Show sequences that flow. Using jumps and rolls link three different balances Write on board. together. 1. Clear beginning and end 2. One movement flows into the next 3. Hold balance for three seconds 4. Extend body parts when possible 5. Emphasize theme STATION 3 1. Balance and roll 2. Balance on different body parts/surfaces

BALANCE

BALANCE Explain – large surface areas are patches, small surface areas are points. Concepts: 1. Base of support a. Wider more stable b. More surface area in contact more stable. Tense body 2. Height of C of G – lower more stable. Extend body parts 3. Distribution of mass.

“Show me a balance with one patch and two points.” Change. Vary points, direction of body. “Show me a balance with three points” In line, wide apart. “Show me a balance with two points, then one point”

Which balances are more stable? “Show a balance with one patch and two points with free body parts extend as far as Unstable unless you can.” Change balance over C of G “Same again but this time experiment with body parts above your head but tucked in” Upsidedown shape Stable when close to C of G. Grade 1/2 – Balance and roll “Sharing mats with a partner and using a run combine two balances emphasizing rolling.” STATION 4

1. Travel on/off equipment 2. Individual sequence 3. Partner sequence (side by side)

Theme development - On and Off

MAIN BODY/CONCEPT One small mat each “From standing to a balance show me how many different rolls you can do from one end of the mat to the other.”

 Run, Jump and Roll to a balance  Add turn or body shape to jump.  Extend body parts on balance Show examples of sequences

Put out apparatus in pairs. Lift technique. Avoiding mats, run then vault on apparatus taking off and landing on the same spot.  Clear beginning, middle and Place your mat next to a piece of apparatus. end.  Try to vault and land going into a roll to a balance  Hold 3 secs One patch and two point balance  Flow movement “Combine RUN with 2 BALANCES, JUMPS, & ROLLS with a partner emphasizing going on and off the apparatus” SET-UP STATIONS.

Drawing on experience with balances and rolls, use a piece of apparatus to develop a sequence with 2 balances and two rolls, emphasizing wide and narrow feet. What is the theme?  Clear beg and end  Extend body parts  One movement flows into next  Hold balances for 3 seconds

Show a couple that highlight Add a partner. Choose a movement theme and combine sequences with apparatus.

STATIONS

4 groups of 3. Set up stations then wait for me to check. Characteristics of a good station -  Different heights  Multiple entries and exits  Use of floor surrounding apparatus  Increasing angles to swing and slide from

Question when exploring

Play on each finding ways of going onto and off apparatus

What gym action words do each of the apparatus set-ups encourage?

RUN, JUMP, ROLL, HANG, SWING, ROCK, STEP, SLIDE, BALANCE and CLIMB

Working with a partner and using the bench, create a sequence where you traveling into and out of three different balances.
