Reading Directions: Examine the characters in Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett’s “The Diary of Anne Frank”. Pay attention to their words and actions. Create a brainstorming sheet in which you consider the following questions:  Which characters have a positive influence on life in the annex?  Which characters behave admirably in difficult situations?  How is each character perceived by the other inhabitants of the annex?  What specific character traits are beneficial in the annex? (ex., honesty, optimism, bravery, intelligence, kindness, etc.)

Then create a character map in which you list in detail the traits your character possesses and evidence to support your claim.

Writing Directions: Write a 2 page essay in which you describe a character from the annex that you believe is admirable. Define your criteria by identifying at least three admirable traits possessed by the character. Locate and discuss specific examples, including plot events and quotations that support your opinion. Write your essay in the 3rd person point of view.

Scoring Checklist:  State a thesis that identifies an admirable character.  Identify the 3 admirable traits possessed by the character.  Support your thesis with examples from the text, exhibiting careful reading and insight.  Organize your writing with a strong introduction, body, and conclusion.  Use words that are appropriate for your audience and purpose.  Vary your sentences to make your writing more interesting to read.  Check for mistakes in grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence formation.
