Academic Senate President S Report s1

Academic Senate President’s Report April 16-28, 2009

April 16-18th—Carol Enns, Joni Jordan and I attended the Senate Plenary in Millbrae.

April 20th--Exec Board—We discussed the upcoming awards events. On May 11th, the Senate and the Board of Trustees will present 10, 20, 30 and 40-year service awards. On May 13, during the Senate meeting, newly tenured faculty members and retiring faculty will be honored. We will also present a plaque to Larry Owens, our TCOE nominee for “Teacher of the Year.” We finished the logistics for Janet Fulks’ workshop on Program Level SLOs on May 7th from 1-4 pm in Instructional Council. If you are interested in attending, please contact me ASAP.

April 21-22—I read applications for the Academic VP of Instruction position. The three finalists will speak at a forum on May 13th from 1-3 pm. The room will be announced soon. The Senate survey on web woes went out and we had 53 responses the first day.

April 23—I attended the Budget Committee for Chris Knox. We went over current expenditures for the year. More detail will be provided at the next meeting. The report is still not complete.

April 27—Cabinet Discussed IKON and personal printers again. Steve Renton will be sending out a letter. We looked at a list of dues and membership. COS spends $101,000 each year. We are going to see which ones we can cut. We discussed the Open House that took place on April 25th. Debbie Douglass was commended for her work in coordinating it. More people attended this year than last. We did some brainstorming for next year, which will be passed along, to Debbie.

April 28th—College Council Dr. Scroggins outlined his vision for International or Global Education at COS. He hopes to have 200 students annually from different countries attending COS who are interested in obtaining vocational certificates and/or transfer education. The first country we would recruit from would be China, but he hopes to include Latin America also. COS student and faculty exchanges would follow as the program expands.

Dr. Scroggins spoke about Legislative Bill 1445 that will allow selected community colleges to offer 4-year BAs. He is currently trying to add COS to the legislation to draw attention to the fact that we live in the largest county not to have a CSU.

There were numerous General Institution Administrative Procedures introduced for a first read. Please see the College Council Agenda for a complete list. Hiring continues a pace for Nursing (2 positions), English (2 positions), 1 History position, the Dean of Counseling and the Academic VP of Instruction. A programmer position to replace Lee McDonald will be postponed until the Fall due to uncertainty in the budget.
