Whistleblowing Policy

Remarks: -

This document outlines the responsibilities of staff working at St Matthews Preschool if they have concerns regarding unacceptable practice or behaviour.

Date Task Name Position March 2012 Policy originated Caroline Carr Pre-School Supervisor Definition Whistleblowing is raising a concern about malpractice within an organisation.

Reasons for whistleblowing  Each staff member has a responsibility for raising concerns about unacceptable practice or behaviour  To prevent the problem getting worse  To protect children in our care from harm  To prevent becoming implicated yourself

What stops people from whistleblowing?  Fear of being wrong  Fear of not being believed  Fear of damaging careers  Fear of repercussions  Fear of starting a chain of events that escalates  Fear of losing friendships

Procedure to follow  If a member of staff is concerned about a colleagues behaviour or practice they have a duty to voice their concern.  Try to pinpoint what practice is concerning you and why  The member of staff should report the matter to the Whistleblowing Lead (Tracy-Anne Clancy).  Concerns should be documented and this will be kept confidential where possible.  A member of staff is not expected to prove the truth of an allegation, but will need to demonstrate sufficient grounds for the concern.  The Whistleblowing Lead will undertake an investigation into these concerns and offer you support.  A disclosure made in good faith will be protected. Confidentiality will be maintained wherever possible and the staff member will not suffer any personal detriment as a result of raising a genuine concern.

2  The Whistleblowing Lead person will provide 1 : 1 supervision twice a year to each member of staff. This will involve a discussion between them around any issues or concerns raised.
