English 352 - Technical Writing - Course Plan (Twice a Week Class Schedule)

English 340-003 – Oral Presentation (Spring 2014) – Kupfrian 117, M / Th, 1-2:30 pm

Eng 340 – Oral Presentations (Prerequisites: HUM 101 and two from among HUM 102, HUM 211, HUM 212 and Hist 213 or their equivalents): Instruction and practice in effective oral presentations. Students deliver a wide range of presentations adapted to the needs of a variety of audiences. Topics include voice and diction, presentation skills, the effective use of visual aids, reporting technical material and audience analysis.

Dr. Carol Siri Johnson Office – 433 Cullimore [email protected] Office Hours: email for appointment Course Goals:  To practice a variety of oral presentations in a variety of situations.  To learn some presentation and video software, hardware and graphics.  To learn to engage an audience and speak loudly and clearly. Textbook: None Class Rules:  Attendance: is required and is graded: 0-1 absences = 15 (highest score); 2 absences = 13; 3 absences = 11; 4 absences = 9; 5 absences = 7; 6 absences = 5; 7 or more = 0. If you miss more than 8 classes you should withdraw from the course.  Preparedness: every time you are called on to give a speech and you are not ready, one point will be deducted from your score. Assignments & Grading All grading will be done numerically. For instance, if an assignment is worth 10%, it will receive a grade from 1 to 10. These grades will be added at the end of the semester for the final grade. Weather Disturbances In the event there is a major storm, we will shift either to Moodle or to alternate assignments. Final Grades: A = 91 – 100 B+ = 86 – 90 B = 80 – 85 C+ = 75 – 79 C = 70 – 74 D = 65 – 69 F = 0 – 64

Assignment Rules:  Each presentation is strictly limited in time.  Every time you are called on to give a speech and you are not ready, one point will be deducted from your score.  When using PowerPoint, use images rather than text.

#1 Speech about a Speech, Part 1 – find an interesting online speech to discuss – it can be from any speaker in any language or era. Be prepared to show a 1-minute segment of the speech to 2-3 min. 5% the class and briefly explain why you chose it. Purpose: Informal planning speech

#2 Speech about a Speech, Part 2 – prepare a 2 to 3 minute description of the speech using no 2-3 min. 5% visual or video examples. Purpose: Practice using voice only

#3 Speech about a Speech, Part 3– using the experience and feedback you had from the previous practice speech, combine the video segment and verbal presentation into 7 to 10 minute speech. Video segments should be no longer than 1 minute (although you can use 2 or three segments 7-10 min. 15% throughout speech. TIMING WILL BE GRADED. Purpose: Formal speech, combining voice and video, controlling time

#4 Group Assignment – Broadcast TV Newscast – in groups of 4 to 6, each group will write and perform a 10-minute newscast (choose your own topics, real or imaginary, but imitate the news). 3 or 4 group members can be newscasters and 1-2 can manage the video behind the newscasters 10 min. 10% (such as weather maps). Emulate the newscasters in speaking clearly and being brief. The presentation should be seamless and professional. Purpose: group work, creativity, clarity and brevity of speech, seamless technology

#5 Verbal Proposal for Main Speech – choose 2 or 3 topics that you may want to use for your main speech. Tell the class why you thought of those topics and what your speech may include 2-3 min. 5% (i.e., video, PowerPoint, demonstration, etc.). Purpose: Informal planning speech

#6 Written Proposal for Main Speech – after deciding on the topic, write a proposal about why you chose it and what extra props you are going to use to meet the 15 minute minimum (i.e., video, PowerPoint, class activity, demonstration, etc.). Include your name, a title for your N/A 5% speech and a one or two paragraph description. Purpose: Finalizing informal planning; titles for a list

#7 Main Speech – you have to fill 15 minutes (20 maximum) minutes to deliver your speech. You will be graded on student interest, seamless incorporation of support materials and timing. 15 – 20 25% Purpose: Formal speech, combining voice, video and props, controlling audience interest and min. time

#8 Online Oral Presentation – Use Camtasia Relay or a webcam and YouTube to create and 3 – 5 min. 15% upload a 3 to 5 minute presentation on any topic. Purpose: Recording software and hardware; clarity of voice in speech

#9 Class Participation – 0-1 absences = 15 (highest score); 2 absences = 13; 3 absences = 11; 4 15% absences = 9; 5 absences = 7; 6 absences = 5; 7 or more = 0. Purpose: Attendance is graded because the single most important thing for all jobs and most classes is that you are present.
