There is no charge (although donations are welcome) and refreshments and snacks are provided free. It is run purely by volunteers and screening are usually on the third Friday of each month. Drop into the library to see what films are upcoming. 8 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 A war time tale from Scotland It is strange how what you see or hear reminds you of something which occurred many years ago. I had been watching a TV programme related to the sinking of the German battleship, Tirpitz, when it brought back childhood memories of the war. There had been considerable aerial activity in the northeast of Scotland during 1944. To a youngster, the aeroplanes we saw were noisy giants flying low over the land. They were from RAF Lossiemouth. The aerodrome had been constructed between 1938 and 1939 as a military airfield located on the western edge of the town of Lossiemouth in Moray. Geographically, north east Scotland was closer to Norway than London. Nothing was known by us children locally about war time operations for obvious reasons. My family lived in a farm cottage about 4 miles south of Elgin, which was about 6 miles south of Lossiemouth. The view north from our house gave views of the surrounding area northwards towards Elgin and Lossiemouth but we could not see the airfield. At night the sound of large planes flying overhead could be clearly heard as we lay in our beds and I would imagine their missions as they flew over Europe. Towards the end of October and beginning of November that year, there were noticeably more planes both day and night. It was quite awe-inspiring to us youngsters; the excitement and our vivid imaginations running wild. In later years I learnt why these huge planes were flying from Lossiemouth. The planes were Lancaster bombers and were preparing for the operation which destroyed the German battleship, Tirpitz. I saw a bit of history being made.
