2 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 Message from the Editor

It is spring again and preparations are being made for the summer fete and dog show on Saturday 20th June, a parish wide litter pick, the new skate park and multi-use games area (MUGA), amongst other things. In this edition we have included a tale from a local man about growing up in Scotland; we have information about the national VE day commemorations and what we are doing. We give notice of the upcoming Parish Council Elections and how you can get involved, and we ask in these days of electronic communications, do you want a paper copy of this magazine or do you want to down load it from the parish council website? Please remember to mention us if you use any of the advertisers listed as they need to know their adverts are worthwhile and we need the income stream to produce this magazine so you get it for free.

OnScreen at Library is a not for profit service provided by the Friends of Wendover Library to provide the best of new (and possibly some old) films to the community.

This has been made possible thanks to subscriptions and donations by the Friends group, enabling us to install a 72inch screen and Dolby surround sound in the Library meeting room, all of which provides a close to cinema experience.

There is no charge (although donations are welcome) and refreshments and snacks are provided free. It is run purely by volunteers and screening are usually on the third Friday of each month.

Drop into the library to see what films are upcoming.

8 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 A war time tale from Scotland

It is strange how what you see or hear reminds you of something which occurred many years ago. I had been watching a TV programme related to the sinking of the German battleship, Tirpitz, when it brought back childhood memories of the war. There had been considerable aerial activity in the northeast of Scotland during 1944. To a youngster, the aeroplanes we saw were noisy giants flying low over the land. They were from RAF Lossiemouth. The aerodrome had been constructed between 1938 and 1939 as a military airfield located on the western edge of the town of Lossiemouth in Moray. Geographically, north east Scotland was closer to Norway than . Nothing was known by us children locally about war time operations for obvious reasons. My family lived in a farm cottage about 4 miles south of Elgin, which was about 6 miles south of Lossiemouth. The view north from our house gave views of the surrounding area northwards towards Elgin and Lossiemouth but we could not see the airfield. At night the sound of large planes flying overhead could be clearly heard as we lay in our beds and I would imagine their missions as they flew over Europe. Towards the end of October and beginning of November that year, there were noticeably more planes both day and night. It was quite awe-inspiring to us youngsters; the excitement and our vivid imaginations running wild. In later years I learnt why these huge planes were flying from Lossiemouth. The planes were Lancaster bombers and were preparing for the operation which destroyed the German battleship, Tirpitz. I saw a bit of history being made.

Parish Council News

Annual Parish Meeting – 23rd April Our statutory annual meeting is being held on Thursday 23rd April 2020. We will have speakers representing different activities within the parish. The meeting will conclude with the opportunity to meet your local parish councillors over cheese and wine and discuss issues that affect you. Village hall extension The new extension and alterations at the Village Hall are now complete. This has provided new changing facilities for sports teams along with a meeting room and office for the Parish Council. If you wish to meet with the Clerk or a Parish Councillor, please contact the Parish Council on 01296 612838 or via email. All meetings of the Council and its committees will now be held in the new meeting room. Litter Pick – 18th April The Parish Council is supporting the Parish Litter Pick on 18th April and will be providing litter pickers, black sacks and high viz jackets to volunteers. Please come along and meet up at the village hall car park on the day or if you want to litter pick in your area on another day, let the Clerk know and she can arrange for you to borrow the equipment. 2020 Local Elections In May, elections are being held for the new unitary council “” and for Weston Turville Parish Council (Parish councillors). The latter provides an opportunity not only for you to elect 10 parish councillors, but to become one of them yourself! It is an excellent way of being directly involved in the way the community affairs of Weston Turville are run and can be constructive and fulfilling work. Contact Aylesbury Vale District Council in early March and ask for the requisite candidate forms – or speak to one of your current Parish Councillors to find out more. Village Hall Car Park The Council would like to remind everyone that this car park is primarily for visitors to the village hall and playing fields. The school has permission for visitors to park there but school parents are encouraged to walk to school with their children or to park in the Five Bells car park and walk across. We have had complaints about parents arriving early for the school pick up and then sitting in their cars with engines idling in the hall car park. This is very unpleasant for neighbouring residents children walking through car fumes when they leave school – Please switch off your engines and help save the planet!

14 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 Parking A number of verges in the parish are being damaged by cars parking on the grass during the wet weather. Just a reminder that it is an offence for a vehicle to be driven on the grass verge. Precept The precept is the Parish Council’s portion of your Council Tax collected by AVDC. The Parish Council considers its income and expenditure for the upcoming year and sets the precept accordingly. For 2020-21, the Parish Council’s precept increase equates to a 2% rise or additional £1.13 per year on a Band D equivalent property. The Council’s audited accounts can be found on our website. Other plans for the future • At the time of writing we are still awaiting a decision from Aylesbury Vale District Council on the planning application for a skate park and multiuse games area (MUGA) to be sited on the playing field. We have been out to tender for both items and the contractors are waiting to get started! • We have had a request from the U3A for a petanque court and are looking into funding and permissions for this. • We intend to turn the area north of the tennis courts into a wildlife area and it will be planted with wildflowers and other plants to encourage birds and insects. • We will be creating ‘better habitats for wildlife’ by seeding some of our green verges. Village Hall The ladies and gents toilets are being refurbished this year to ensure the building remains fit for purpose for the foreseeable future. The hall will be decorated over the summer and we are also looking at ways to improve the small garden area to the rear of the hall to make it usable throughout the year. From February, meetings of the Parish Council and its committee will be held in the new extension to the right of the hall. Full Council meetings are normally held on the 3rd Thursday of the month (excluding August and December when there are no meetings) at 7pm. Most meetings finish about 9pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Planning meetings are at 6pm on the 1st Thursday. Check the website for any changes to dates, minutes and agendas. Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 19 What can we do for our Environment?

You cannot have failed to be aware of all the ongoing media coverage on environmental issues: Whether it is global warming, Friday protests by teenagers, the destruction of wildlife habitats, unusual weather patterns, heatwaves and droughts, stories about the use of old rubber tyres to patch roads, HS2 and ancient woodlands, the changes in the refuse tip/recycling centres opening hours and charges: whatever the headline is, the media has been full of it for months. So what has it to do with the residents of Weston Turville? There are the obvious concerns about ozone levels and the detrimental effect it will have on all of us, the local impact on our lives of our countryside being destroyed, the inconvenience of summer water shortages and hosepipe bans and the introduction of fees to ‘dump’ some household rubbish at the tip and flytipping. I am not a scientist nor do I work in any council department that deals with the tip and fly tipping so I cannot say what, if any, of this is true. I personally think the summers are generally hotter and the winters are generally warmer and wetter; the reservoirs are lower during the summer and blue algae seem to be more prevalent. I notice more large items fly tipped in laybys but less of the smaller items. It could be that I am now more aware of fly tipping so ‘see’ it more. I am very aware of all the new houses being built across the whole of the Aylesbury Vale and the increase in vehicular traffic which may or may not be correlated with this. I notice when cars sit with their engines idling; when they are parked on pavements and across dropped curbs so people cannot walk on the pavements and mobility scooters and wheelchairs can’t cross roads. I notice the litter scattered around our green spaces and on the verges; the dog mess on footpaths and pavements where people walk. These may seem irrelevant in the scheme of things but they discourage people from walking and resort to driving thereby having a knock on effect on the volume of traffic using the roads. Have you heard of the ‘worry roundel?’ Image 3 circles, an outer, middle and inner, like a dart board. If you hypothetically put all your worries that you can influence and control the outcomes of, in the inner circle: e.g. I am thirsty, hungry, the lawn needs mowing, the house needs cleaning; I haven’t spoken to my friends for some time, are they ok? Well you have complete control about how to resolve those issues to stop you worrying about them. If you hypothetically put your worries which you can influence but not control in the middle circle i.e. I need a pay rise, AVDC keep approving planning applications without considering things that are important to the local area, the traffic is speeding through the village, my car isn’t working properly, etc etc. You can use your

20 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 influence to help others decide how to deal with these situations. The final decision may not be yours or even as you would wish but you have tried to influence the people who can correct or decide these things. The final circle is for the things we cannot influence of control. They include international political affairs, the weather, punctuality of public transport, melting ice caps and so on. We need to put our local environmental issues into the first category and do something about it! How can you help?  Join us for a litter pick on the 18th April, meet at the village hall at 10am or do the street where you live but let the Parish Council know - litter pickers, gloves and sacks are available.  Slow down when driving through the speed restricted areas; it is a maximum speed limit not a minimum one. If you don’t care about speeding in the area you live why should a stranger?  Be careful where you park; are you blocking a pavement, creating a hazard, damaging a verge?  Turn your engine off whilst waiting for your child to come out of school.  Report any fly tipping to Highways using details on useful numbers page.  Recycle things, use the free recycle sites on line for Aylesbury, repair things using the monthly Repair Shop (see the ‘What’s On’ page), sell things on Facebook market or eBay or at a car boot: if it is valuable sell it at the local auction house. If we can show we care about our local environment and take a pride in living here then maybe, just maybe, the decision makers will listen to us and our ability to influence others to care about our environment will increase. WELCOME!

I would like to say ‘Welcome’ to everyone who has arrived here in Weston Turville and we, the Church in Weston Turville, would like to welcome you in our Church. We would like you to come along to one or many more of our services. Actually we hope you’ll stay around for years and be a part of a community, which welcomes people.

But what of those of us who have lived here in Weston Turville for many years? We would likewise wish to welcome you into the life of your Parish Church.

Everyone is welcome because God welcomes everyone! We know Jesus isn’t fussy about who meet Him, in fact God likes to meet people and God loves everyone.

Your parish church can be found on Church Walk HP22 5SH in Weston Turville. We can be found on our website www.stmaryswt.org, www.achurchnearyou.com .

We are also raising money to build an accessible meeting room next to the church for use by the church and the residents of Weston Turville, (see https://swift- wt.co.uk/home.html for details).

All services are public, they are for all. If you live here you can be married here (subject to legalities), buried here, christened (yes adults as well as children), prepare for confirmation, prayed for … and so the list goes on.

28 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020

There is one health warning. Do not expect everyone in the Church to be ‘perfect’ all the time. We’re not! We all have our off days or moments. We are all work in progress and hope God will continue to transform our lives, and yours too.

On Palm Sunday we have a special event in the evening and as with everything you will be welcome. Below is an invitation from Rev. Susan.

Like it or not God loves you.

34 Weston Turville Times Spring 2020 Egg-citing Fun!

It wouldn’t be Easter (or any other day) without eggs. Did you know that in 2018 the UK ate over 13 MILLION eggs? That’s a lot of cakes, breakfasts and chickens. Eggs come in all sorts of sizes and colours and not all can be eaten. (Would you want to eat a dinosaur egg?)

They can also be very expensive. Beautiful Fabergé eggs like the one above, sell for over £20m.

True or False?

1. The world’s smallest egg is laid by a quail. 2. The largest egg on record weighed 2.589 kg. 3. A person eats on average a thousand eggs a year. 4. 3 eggs,or more is called a nest of eggs. 5. The smelly smell of a rotten egg is hydrogen sulphide.

Chef hats traditionally have pleats equal to the number of ways that you can prepare an egg. Can you think of all the different ways you can prepare an egg? Clue - a chef’s hat has 100 pleats.
