Job purpose To be the principal BI Developer for the Wessex Institute, providing leadership in SQL and reporting-related matters and development, and working with the BI Development Lead to ensure the Wessex Institute benefits from an agile, innovative and value-added BI development service.  To be responsible for the delivery of a portfolio of high quality reports and dashboards which support a range of business reporting requirements.  To manage the complete end-to-end lifecycle of report development, from requirement gathering, analysis and data modelling in SQL through to application design, testing, sign-off and deployment.  To take a lead role in developing SQL and other BI-related skillsets within the wider Reporting & Business Intelligence Team to underpin resilience and business continuity.  To work with the other Senior Developers and the wider senior management team to contribute to the technical and strategic direction of the Information Team.

Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time 1. To act as senior developer using a variety of reporting technologies, using extensive expertise and 45 % experience in the design, development, unit testing and deployment of a suite of high quality reports and dashboards, using agreed best practices for design and development standards to achieve a well-engineered result. In addition, to ensure comprehensive documentation of technical design specifications and test scripts is delivered alongside development products. 2. To line-manage BI Development resources and oversee the quality of their work. To assist with the 10% determination of new or replacement posts within the Development Team and the wider Information Team as necessary 3. To use extensive technical knowledge and experience to mentor and develop line-managed staff 10 % and others across the wider Reporting & Business Intelligence Team in order to upskill and build resilience. 4. To work with other members of the Reporting & Business Intelligence Team to develop a coherent 10% suite of transactional, management information and decision support reports and dashboards. 5. To manage priorities, tolerances and escalations across multiple work packages while complying 5 % with project and technical architecture frameworks. To escalate issues to the BI Development Lead as necessary. 6. To work with the Senior Database Administrator to oversee the deployment of reports for testing 5% and production, and provide support for developed reports - including working with users identify resolve issues. 7. To develop and maintain relationships with the wider Information Team, Business Users and other 5 % stakeholders. Stakeholders will include senior staff and external stakeholders. 8. To work with BI Development Lead to keep work of the Development Team aligned to strategy and 5 % to continually improve processes. 9. Any other duties as allocated by line management following consultation with the post holder 5 % including deputising for the Head of Information Systems and/or the Head of Business Intelligence as necessary

Special Requirements  To maintain the relevant level of professional expertise and qualifications to discharge the duties and to agree with line management on a relevant professional development programme.  Occasional out of hours working may be required to perform certain tasks on the system whilst minimising disruption to users.

How to be Criteria Essential Desirable assessed Qualifications, Skill level equivalent to achievement of ITIL Foundation certified or experience CV & knowledge and a professional qualification or working in an environment that uses Interview experience postgraduate degree in a best practice service methodologies technical/numerate subject such as ITIL.

3) Data Warehousing and ETL (Extract, Transform and Load).

4) QlikView, or (similar BI toolset) application design and development

Extensive experience of Dashboard development including drill-down and drill-through

Proven experience of delivering large, technically complex projects.

Experienced user of Microsoft Office applications: Visio, Excel, Word and MS Project. Planning and Able to work autonomously, yet Able to interpret and align work to CV & organising collaboratively with senior stakeholders corporate and departmental strategy.
