Farrington 9/11 Memorial Bridge 17 18 19 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 20 21 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 22 1/10/2013 Senate Introduced ( Senate Journalpage 38) 23 1/10/2013 Senate Referred to Committee on Transportation ( Senate Journalpage 38) 24 25 26 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 27 28 1/10/2013 29 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF 12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE BRIDGE IN YORK 13 COUNTY THAT CROSSES INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 77 14 ALONG SUTTON ROAD THE “PATRIOT LEONARD A. 15 FARRINGTON 9/11 MEMORIAL BRIDGE” AND ERECT 16 APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS BRIDGE 17 THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “PATRIOT LEONARD A. 18 FARRINGTON 9/11 MEMORIAL BRIDGE”. 19 20 Whereas, on September 11, 2001, our nation suffered an attack on 21 our soil from terrorists; and 22 23 Whereas, immediately after that attack, many individuals took to 24 the streets in shock, horror, and disbelief as to what had happened; 25 and 26 27 Whereas, patriotic citizens of this great United States pulled their 28 American flags out of storage and hoisted them up flag poles 29 across this country; and 30 31 Whereas, one such patriot was Mr. Leonard Farrington of Rock 32 Hill, South Carolina who stood for hours on the Sutton Road 33 overpass on Interstate Highway 77 waving his flag; and 34 35 Whereas, he later stored that flag in a special place and would pull 36 it out of storage on each anniversary of September 11, 2001, made 37 his way to the same bridge and waived the flag again for hours. 38 He did this not for recognition or personal gain, but he did it for 39 his love of the United States of America; and 40 41 Whereas, at the age of eighty-nine, Mr. Farrington would no 42 longer physically perform this patriotic duty, so in 2011, he passed

[215] 2 1 his flag on to the Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 of Rock Hill, South 2 Carolina, who took up the charge in his honor; and 3 4 Whereas, in January 2012, Mr. Farrington passed away, but his 5 legacy will continue with Rolling Thunder; and 6 7 Whereas, it would be appropriate to forever recognize Mr. Leonard 8 A. Farrington’s patriotism by naming the bridge in York County 9 that crosses Interstate Highway 77 along Sutton Road in his honor. 10 Now, therefore, 11 12 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 13 concurring: 14 15 That the members of the General Assembly request the 16 Department of Transportation name the bridge in York County that 17 crosses Interstate Highway 77 along Sutton Road the “Patriot 18 Leonard A. Farrington 9/11 Memorial Bridge” and erect 19 appropriate markers or signs at this bridge that contain the words 20 “Patriot Leonard A. Farrington 9/11 Memorial Bridge”. 21 22 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 23 the Department of Transportation. 24 XX 25
