Course Proposal HON-195: Honors Short Term Study

Abroad in Iceland

STEPS FOR SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION FOR A SHORT -TERM TRAVEL PROGRAM:

1. Complete the Course Proposal Form below and submit it to Erin Kane, [email protected], with the required supplemental documentation.

2. After submission, Honors will contact the lead faculty member to schedule a consultation to address additional questions such as location, expenses and travel logistics.

3. The Honors Program Project Coordinator will prepare a preliminary budget in conjunction with the faculty leader(s).

4. The Honors Program will share all proposals with the Office of International Programs along with a request for verification that they have reviewed the proposal in total, addressed any questions or concerns with the faculty and/or OIP and lend their support to the program moving forward.

Submitting a proposal does not guarantee that Honors will be able to facilitate the program. The number of overall submissions, diversity of topics, and broad appeal of subject matter will be taken into consideration as program plans are solidified.

Please complete the following form by typing directly into the Word document or Adobe Pro, saving, and submitting electronically. This method is preferred, as handwriting may be difficult to decipher.

1. Please explain why you wish to propose this course. What are the academic objectives and how will your proposed itinerary assist with meeting the stated academic objectives?

2. Do you have any prior experience in the country or countries where you are proposing to lead this course? If yes, please explain.

Note: Depending on the destination, if neither you nor your co-leader has any prior experience in the host country, it may require that we utilize a service provider to facilitate the program.

3. Each course requires at least two leaders per program. The primary leader must be a USM faculty member, either part-time for full-time. The second leader may be a USM faculty member, staff member, graduate assistant or someone from another University or a colleague in the host country.

Please provide the name, title and contact information of your second leader, as well as their affiliation with USM. Also, please include what experience you have working together and his/her experience in the host country. 4. Faculty members and the Honors Project Coordinator share responsibility for student recruitment for their programs.

a) Please provide at least 2 concrete ideas for recruiting students (beyond speaking with students in your class/academic program) such as educational e-mail list-serves, colleagues at other universities, newsletters, etc.

b) Please comment on the perceived or documented level of interest for this short term travel program.

5. Faculty leaders may also want to consider opportunities to share the faculty-led experience with the USM community. Examples may include a photo gallery and display, art exhibit, student presentation or other events. The Office of International Programs and Honors Program can provide staff support for these events upon your request.

Please describe how you intend to highlight the experiences of your group and the value of your program upon your return to USM. Your success story will go a long way toward increasing future enrollment. A note about health & safety : As you consider your location, please keep in mind any safety measures which might be required for students in the event of civil unrest, natural disasters, communicable diseases and unsafe local transportation students may use in their free time. In addition, travel as part of study abroad is not permitted to countries for which the U.S. Department of State has issued Travel Warnings and/or for which the Centers for Disease Control has issued Travel Health Warnings.

Please initial here to confirm that you have researched, at least initially, these types of threats in the area you are suggesting, as well as access to medical and police facilities, and additional immunizations required for students enrolled in this program.

A note about technology & communication: Depending on the facilities of the host country, regular communication with home could be challenging and may require some additional research/measures to ensure that emergency contact methods are available.
