SANTA MARIA-BONITA SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

A partnership between the Santa Maria-Bonita School District (SMBSD), Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department (SBSO)

I. SCHOOL LOCKDOWN (Call 911 for emergency)

This is the highest state or readiness that is activated when violence is occurring or is imminent on campus, or any other situation deemed by the police or school staff to warrant a total lockdown of the campus.

II. PERSONS WHO MAY ACTIVATE A SCHOOL LOCKDOWN

1. An officer may notify, or request Communications to notify a school to activate a school lockdown. 2. An administrator may, in an immediate, life-threatening situation, activate a school lockdown. 3. Any member of a school staff who observes or suspects a dangerous situation shall immediately notify the principal's office. 4. The principal shall immediately notify the Police Department or Sheriff's Department (depending on location and jurisdiction) and the Superintendent's Office telephone numbers: 361-8110 361-8111 361- 8112.

III. CONDITIONS IN WHICH TO ACTIVATE A SCHOOL LOCKDOWN

1. Someone has a gun/weapon on campus. 2. Someone with a gun/weapon is en route to a campus. 3. Shots are heard on campus. 4. A SERT (Special Emergency Response Team) action. 5. The immediate pursuit of a dangerous suspect. 6. The execution of a high risk search or arrest warrant. 7. A large-scale enforcement operation involving potentially dangerous suspects.

IV. ELEMENT OF A SCHOOL LOCKDOWN (WHAT TO DO)

1. The principal or designee will declare "this is a lockdown" alerting staff and students. If a 911 call has been made and completed, the Superintendent's Office or other Souza key staff must be notified. If no answer, call other Souza Command Cabinet key staff at their respective extensions. 2. All students and staff will respond to the nearest room, take cover and stay low. 3. Doors and windows will be locked, and opened only to students and staff seeking safety, or police. 4. Students and staff will remain quiet and shut off all audio-visual equipment. 5. Students requests to use restroom to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Allow if possible, nearest restroom available. 6. Students out of class will respond to their next scheduled classroom.

7. Parent requests to remove child (other adults must be listed on the Emergency Card) should be handled on a case-by-case basis. Allow if possible, or call SMPD dispatch at phone number 928-3781, ext. 277 or 278. 8. Teachers will take roll and maintain calmness in the classroom. The school will remain in the School Lockdown Mode until an all-clear signal is given.

1 9. First aid will be rendered by staff as necessary. 10. Staff will update police with information on any imminent danger. 11. The school will remain in the lockdown mode until notified otherwise by the Souza Command Center or SMPD. 12. Please place a call to Maintenance & Operations phone number 361-8255, 361-8259 or 361-8260 and Food Services phone number 361-8101 as soon as possible and once school lockdown has been terminated.

**Watch Commander or designee must remember to notify school(s) and the Supt.'s Office at 361-8110, when they may cancel the School Lockdown Mode.
