FROM: Gretchen Marshall, Assistant Director Division of Protection and Permanency

DATE: February 13, 2017

SUBJECT: Safe Infants Law Resource

The purpose of this memorandum is to introduce a new resource for staff when working with parents of infants less than thirty (30) days of age. The new information has been added to the Division of Protection and Permanency website.

The AMT Children of Hope Foundation in Nassau County, New York, staffs an anonymous hotline that is answered twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week. The hotline is intended to be used by pregnant women or mothers of infants who are seeking questions about relinquishing their infant per their state’s safe haven law. Workers may refer individuals to the hotline at 877- 796-HOPE (4673) or to their website at www.amtchildrenofhope.com

Kentucky’s Safe Infants Act was amended during the 2016 legislative session to increase the age limit that a newborn infant may be relinquished at an established safe haven without penalty from three (3) days to less than thirty (30) days. Also, it added participating places of worship as safe haven sites for relinquished newborn infants.
