GIRLS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

SCHEDULE NOTES TO MARCH 1

DATE: JANUARY 15, 2012 TO: GIRLS HOCKEY COACHING STAFF 2012 CC: DEB LOOMER, MARTY LAFRAMBROISE, TRISH MINOR, BARB BAUER FROM: KAREN SINCLAIR RE: SCHEDULE NOTES TO MARCH 1

 The following outlines key items pertaining to the practice file to March 1st.

You will find the practice ice, and HOME games for the teams to March 1st attached. I have included a master EXCEL file that includes the ice for all teams, along with individual team schedules. The Master EXCEL file will be posted on the girl’s hockey website, under the Coaches Corner. Please retrieve your full game files from your respective league site.

Practice ice overview:

Ice during January and February is in short supply, particularly weeknight ice. Esso Minor Hockey week affects our allocation, along with the Esso Golden Ring in January. With the condensed game schedule not only in the RMFL round 2, but also with community Calgary teams (8 weeks as opposed to 10 in round 1), practice ice is affected.

I was able to pick up some city ice to help out our February compliment, so you may see some practices at venues that you have not been scheduled at thus far. Again, limited weeknight ice does result in more shared practice times. Most weekends are very full with games and practices, with very few teams not on ice. As a result, any weekend ice trades may not be possible.

The delay of SFC coming on line affected my ability to pick up additional ice to supplement practices through Hockey Calgary. Next season, I am hopeful that some of the weeknight ice that would normally be allocated to Midnapore and Shaw Meadows might make its way to Girls Hockey. None the less, we have been allocated more suitable and useable ice from Hockey Calgary this season which has enabled our teams to be on ice more often. Hockey Calgary reduced the VSQ ice for us this round, and allocated some Frank McCool instead. Welcomed ice in a great location for many of our members. Beth Long at Hockey Calgary has been very supportive of our program along with Jim at ECTAS.

Second Round Games RMFL:

The completion of the round 2 games was delayed, and I thank you for you patience in awaiting your January ice. The league scheduler has been setting up methods to streamline the process and has made excellent improvements to the format in which the ice is received. I would expect next season to run smoother providing we have continuity in the scheduling position.

1 RMFL Playoffs:

Round 1 of the playoffs start March 1st. The playoffs are to follow a Thursday – Sunday format this season. I will be scheduling most practices Monday – Wed prior to the weekend games. I will have some ice Thursday – Sunday as well to allocate once the game schedules have been completed. I have scheduled some practices March 1st as I am not certain how many playoff games will be scheduled that day.

Round#1 - March 1-4 Round#2 - March 8-11 Round#3 - March 15-18/22-25 These dates allow most games to be played on weekends and should be able to get completed. Round#3 playoffs shows (2) weekend to accommodate teams who are in Provincial play downs.

I would ask the Coaches to notify me once you are no longer in completion.

Practice schedules during playoffs will be released with very short notice. Most of our regular permits drop off in March, so ice will be sporadic. I will be working with Hockey Calgary to supplement areas where we may be short on practice ice. I have also had to project playoff game needs for our AAA program. Some of this ice may return to our practice pool if not required for AAA playoff games.

Post season Tournaments:

If you are planning on attending a tournament in March, and are no longer participating in playoffs, please let me know, and I will try to fit in a practice for you.

Running Totals Report: (Listed below)

The ice tracked in the running totals report includes HOME practice, and HOME game ice. Every effort is made to schedule the teams as closely to one another within their Division during the season. Some teams do end up with a higher allocation of game ice due to longer ice assignments, and this is considered in the overall ice allocation for that particular team.

Our NW ice pool includes a 4:15 and 4:45 p.m. weeknight start along with a 7:00 a.m. Sunday ice time. NW teams will have received a higher allocation of these ice times. Due to the volume of early weeknight starts that our AAA teams used this season, our RMFL teams were spared these start times except when the AAA teams had schedule windows. Hockey Calgary also provided us with weekend ice times that did not include early starts. Hug a AAA Coach the next time you see one, and thanks to Beth at Hockey Calgary for providing some nice ice times for our players.

Total hours year to date include home game and practice hours. I have done my best to bring the teams as close to one another within their respective age groups for the season. Given that the dimensions of our ice allocation differ week to week this is quite challenging, and is not an exact process.

Please no not make comparisons outside of your Division, as scheduling parameters and budget differ for each.
