3. Brief Over the Following Stories (or read them if you have not already)
“Man with a Problem” - Handout - Know plot chart, characters, conflict, type of conflict - Know irony in the story - Know elements of suspense in the story
“Blood Knots” - p. 33 - Know plot chart, character, conflict, types of conflicts and symbolism - Answer question #1 in text book - Find and explain TWO examples of symbolism in the story (hint: Think of the title – what can blood represent with her father? And how can a knot be symbolic? “Paid-Up Member” – p. 116 - Know allusion, plot chart, irony and foreshadowing in the story - Hint: How does the allusion create foreshadow? How is this crucial to the resolution? - Concerning Simon, what is so ironic about Dickie’s gift from the military?
Read and listen to Jay Z’s song “Empire State of Mind” -Locate and highlight as many allusions that you can find. (You may need to do some investigating on words or names you are not familiar with).
“The Interlopers” – p. 41 - Know cause and effect of feud, plot and characters, different types of conflicts - Know the different examples of irony (Clue: who really owns the land? Who are the real interlopes? Who are the real predators and prey?)
“D.B. Cooper” – p. 120 - Know plot - Locate at LEAST 3 elements of suspense (what are specific moments in the story that make the reader excited or nervous to what will happen next?)
“The Knife Sharpener” – p. 148 - Know plot chart, theme, type of conflict and elements of suspense - What is ironic about the lesson the mother tries to teach to her daughter?
“Little Red Riding Hood” - in textbook - Know spoof, political correctness and theme
“Citizen’s Arrest” - in textbook - Know plot graph - Know irony in the story
“Euphemistic Language” by George Carlin - Handout - Know examples of euphemisms given by Carlin - What is his thesis? (His main argument concerning euphemisms).
