Vocabulary a Key for Effective Communication Skills: A Necessity for Engineering Students
XYZ Assistant Professor Orchid College of Engineering and Technology Solapur Maharashtra
Abstract
It is rightly said, “Without grammar, very little can be conveyed. Without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed”. In today’s competitive scenario engineering students face a tough competition, especially when it comes to placements. Placements being the ultimate goal of majority of engineering students, the basic obstacle that the students face is with effective
Communication Skills and Soft Skills.
The paper examines the major problem of vocabulary of students from two tier cities and that becomes an obstacle in the placement process. Students get well versed with technical vocabulary relative to their domain, as it is frequently heard and understood by them. But when it comes to general vocabulary, they suffer a set back and this becomes a hurdle during different phases of their career like presentation, group discussion, personal interview and technical interview. The basic reason is that they are either unaware of the importance of vocabulary or they reluctant to make necessary effort required to enrich their vocabulary. Students are expected to be confident, fluent with their communication, effective body language, subject knowledge and good thought process. Many a time it so happens that students are strong at concepts and knowledge, but they are unable to express their thoughts fluently.. They need to start making effort to enhance their vocabulary right from their first year of engineering. In today’s era of technology a student can easily use applications like online dictionary, TOI App and Reading
App, which will help them in not only content development but vocabulary development also.
Daily reading of newspaper and magazines, listening to talk shows, speeches, watching English movies, series and so on will help them increase their store of vocabulary. Parallel to this, they need to make a note of difficult words, along with their meanings, antonyms and synonyms, the different contexts in which the words are used, and their pronunciations. At least a student should make a target of 5 new words daily. Many students dither to speak in English. The teaching-learning process, in English, will also contribute in enriching the student’s vocabulary.
So, it is observed that engineering students from two tier cities face obstacles while communicating in English and the major and basic reason is paucity of Vocabulary.
