GLOBAL ECONOMICS COURSE SYLLABUS 11/12

Brother James Lewnard C.S.V. Course Description:

This one semester course provides and overview of basic economic terms, goals and policies both nationally and globally. Topics covered include: basic economic concepts, reasons for and the effects of trade, trade policies, tariffs, quotas and voluntary export restraints, trade agreements and institutions to include the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund and the world Bank. Additional topics include: exchange rates, role of global economics as an influence on income, unemployment and inflation. The course will also focus on events in other parts of the world and how they impact the U. S. economy.

Course Objectives:

1. Upon completion of the semester students will be able to:

2. identify and discuss the fundamental economic concepts and how decisions are made within economic environments.

3. identify and discuss the major factors that affect supply and demand and the resulting impact on prices changes.

4. evaluate the various economic measurement tools and their affect on economic decisions.

5. develop an awareness of the issues that affect our expanding global economy.

Basic Course Outline:

Quarter 1- Economic Fundamentals:

Workbook Chapters 1 and 2- What is Economics? - Economic Systems and Decision Making

Microeconomics: Chapters 4 and 5- Demand and Supply

Quarter 2- Macroeconomics:

Chapters 11 and 12- Money and Banking- Financial Markets Chapters 13 and 14- Economic Performance and Economic Instability Chapters 17-19 - International Trade and Global Economics

In addition, we will set aside a day each week to delve into how the stock markets operate, personal finance and credit.

Means of evaluation: Tests, quizzes, weekly articles, homework and reports will all be means by which you can attain points. This course will utilize a running point system with each assignment carrying a specified point value.

Senior Exemption:

Per department rule, seniors may be exempt from the final exam if they have a 93% or better average both quarters. (note that is different from a 93% final average)
