These species are listed according to the classification of Loeblish & Tappan (1988), updated for the Recent species by Debenay et al. (1996). Their affinity with microfaunas from other regions is briefly discussed. Resume La compilation des travaux sur les foramini:feres actuels et quaternaires recoltes dans les eaux entourant la Nouvelle-Caledonie nous a permis de repertorier 574 especes. Ces especes sont presen tees selon la classification de Loeblish & Tappan (1988), mise ajour pour les especes actuelles par Debenay et al. (1996). Leur affinite avec les microfaunes d'autres regions est discutee brievement. Introduction The first study about foraminifera from the southwestern Pacific near New Caledonia was carried out by Brady (1884) during the voyage of H.M.S. Challenger (1873-1876), updated by Barker (1960), The nearest station was station 177, near Vanuatu (16°45'S-168°5'E). However, studies concerning directly New Caledonia began much later, with partial and local inventories in coastal samples (Gambini,1958, 1959; Renaud-Debyser, 1965; Toulouse, 1965, 1966). Samples of recent and fossil sediments collected during the Singer-Polignac mission (1960-1965) were further used for several studies of foraminiferal assemblages (Coudray & Margerel, 1974; Coudray, 1976; Margerel, 1981). -

Five New Species and One New Genus of Recent Miliolid Foraminifera from Raja Ampat (West Papua, Indonesia)
Five new species and one new genus of recent miliolid foraminifera from Raja Ampat (West Papua, Indonesia) Meena Förderer and Martin R. Langer Steinmann Institut, Paleontology, University of Bonn, Bonn, NRW, Germany ABSTRACT Raja Ampat is an archipelago of about 1,500 small islands located northwest off the Bird's Head Peninsula of Indonesia's West Papua province. It is part of the Coral Triangle, a region recognized as the ``epicenter'' of tropical marine biodiversity. In the course of a large-scale survey on shallow benthic foraminifera we have discovered one new genus and five new species of recent miliolid benthic foraminifera from the highly diverse reefal and nearshore environments. The new fischerinid genus Dentoplanispirinella is characterized by its planispiral coiling and by the presence of a simple tooth, that differentiate it from Planispirinella Wiesner. It is represented in our sample material by the new species Dentoplanispirinella occulta. The other four species described herein are Miliolinella moia, Miliolinella undina, Triloculina kawea and Siphonaperta hallocki. All new species are comparatively rare and occur sporadically in the sample material. Detailed morphological descriptions, scanning electron microscopy pictures of complete and dissected specimens as well as micro- computed tomography images are provided. The diverse brachiopod fauna from the middle Danian cool-water coral mounds of the Faxe Forma- tion, Denmark, includes the new genus Obliquorhynchia that exhibits an asymmetric folding of the frontal commissure, a rare feature in brachiopods. Two of the most abundant brachiopod species found in the Faxe Formation, ‘Rhynchonella’ flustracea and ‘Rhynchonella’ faxensis, are considered conspecific and are both referred toObliquorhynchia . New Barremian rhynchonellide brachiopod from Ser− bia and the shell microstructure of Tetrarhynchiidae. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 52 (4): 761–782. A new rhynchonellide brachiopod genus Antulanella is erected based on the examination of the external and internal morphologies and shell microstructure of “Rhynchonella pancici”, a common species in the Barremian shallow−water limestones of the Carpatho−Balkanides of eastern Serbia. The new genus is assigned to the subfamily Viarhynchiinae, family Tetrarhynchiidae. The shell of Antulanella is small to rarely medium−sized, subglobose, subcircular, fully costate, with hypothyrid rimmed foramen. The dorsal euseptoidum is much reduced. The dental plates are thin, ventrally diver− gent. The hinge plates are straight to ventrally convex. The crura possess widened distal ends, rarely raduliform or canaliform. The shell is composed of two calcitic layers. The secondary layer is fine fibrous, homogeneous built up of predominantly anisometric anvil−like fibres. Although data on the shell microstructure of post−Palaeozoic rhyncho− nellides are still incomplete, it is possible to distinguish two types of secondary layer: (i) fine fibrous typical of the superfamilies Rhynchonelloidea and Hemithiridoidea and (ii) coarse fibrous typical of the superfamilies Pugnacoidea, Wellerelloidea, and Norelloidea. The new genus Antulanella has a fine fibrous microstructure of the secondary layer, which is consistent with its allocation in the Hemithiridoidea. Antulanella pancici occurs in association with other brachi− opods showing strong Peritethyan affinity and close resemblance to the Jura fauna (= Subtethyan fauna). -

The Mozduran Formation represents mainly carbonatic shallow-water deposits from the Kopet-Dagh basin of northeast Iran. Longtime considered to be of exclusively Late Jurassic (Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian) age, its ranging into the Early Cretaceous has been demonstrated in recent times. The micropalaeontological inventory and bio- stratigraphic data however, are still poorly constrained. In the present contribution, some taxa of Dasycladales [Camp- belliella striata (Carozzi), Montenegrella florifera Bernier, Petrascula bugesiaca Bernier, Petrascula cf. bursiformis (Éttalon), Triplo- porella sp.], benthic foraminifera [Neokilianina rahonensis (Foury & Vincent), Spiraloconulus suprajurassicus Schlagintweit], and sponges (Paronadella? sp., Neuropora lusitanica G. Termier & H. Termier, Thalamopora sp.) are reported. Some taxa are reported for the first time from this formation, some even for the first time from Iran. The identified assemblage is assigned to the Tithonian, although a late Kimmeridgian age for the lowermost part of the section studied is possible. -

Edwards, Geological Survey of Canada, Atlantic Geoscience Centre, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada ABSTRACT Late Paleozoic reconstructions of the North Atlantic juxtapose the eastern margin of the Grand Banks with the con• tinental margin off Iberia. Comparison of the geology of the Grand Banks region with results from ODP Leg 103 on the Galicia margin improves our understanding of the Mesozoic-cenozoic tectonic evolution of these regions and pro• vides new constraints on pre-drift fits. The Grand Banks region is underlain by Paleozoic and Precambrian rocks of the Appalachian Orogen, which were rifted, eroded, and buried during Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic episodes related to formation of the North Atlantic Ocean and the Labrador Sea. The Carson Basin along the eastern margin of the Grand Banks contains Triassic and Ju• rassic evaporites overlain by Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonate and clastic rocks that were deeply eroded during the mid-Cretaceous. This unconformity is overlain by a comparatively thin and undeformed sequence of Cretaceous-Ter• tiary fine-grained marine elastics. Since the mid-Cretaceous, the outer portion of the Carson Basin has subsided to oce• anic depths and now underlies the slope-rise zone. Comparison of the seismic stratigraphy of the Carson Basin with that of the Galicia margin indicates similar tectonic histories and depositional environments from Triassic to Tertiary time.
