ROYAL ARTILLERY DINGHY REGATTA AT AISTC(S), THORNEY ISLAND THURSDAY 28 JUNE 2018 – INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM ENTRY FORM

1. General. The RA Dinghy Regatta will be held on Thu 28 June 18 at the Army Inshore Sail Training Centre (South) [AISTC(S)], Thorney Island. The Regatta is open to all serving members of the Regiment. In support of the Regatta an RYA Level 1/Level 2 Start Sailing/Basic Sailing course will be run from 25 - 29 June 18 at AISTC(S) using Laser Picos (see Para 13). All students on this course will be automatically entered into the Regatta as Individuals, will form part of their Unit team (if entered) and therefore count towards the RA Inter Unit Dinghy Competition. A training day for those units entering a double handed crew (sailing 2K dinghies) in the Regatta will be held on Wed 27 June 18 at AISTC(S) if required.

2. Aim. The aim of this Regatta is to encourage as many as possible to participate in dinghy sailing in a competitive environment.

3. Racing. There will be a series of races on Thu 28 Jun 18 to decide the individual and inter unit competitions. Racing will take place in single hander Laser Pico dinghies and double handed 2000 class dinghies with staggered starts for each fleet. Laser Pico helms must hold at least a RYA Level 1 dinghy qualification or demonstrate their sailing competency to the undersigned by Wed 27 Jun 18. Double handed 2000 dinghy crews must have a competent helm (hold at least a RYA Level 2 dinghy qualification and have experience of helming a double handed dinghy). The crew maybe a novice sailor. Races will be sailed under the current Racing Rules of Sailing and a full pre- racing briefing will be given prior to sailing.

4. Trophies. The following trophies will be awarded:

a. Dinghy Cup for the best individual helm b. Pinchard Pot for the best junior officer helm c. Barron Cup for the best soldier helm

1 d. Loseby Trophy for the best unit team

Prize giving will take place immediately after sailing on Thu 28 Jun 18. Winners of trophies in 2017 are requested to arrange with the undersigned for the return of trophies prior to the event, NLT 1 May 18.

5. Eligibility. The rules for eligibility are set out below. Unit teams will consist of 3 boats, one of which must be a double hander (2000) with at least 2 helms being RA. The format for racing will be decided once the number of participating teams is known.

6. Entries. The Individual and Team Entry Proforma is at Annex A and should be returned to the undersigned NLT Fri 27 Apr 18. The Unit entry fee for the Regatta is £50 which covers both days (training and racing). The Individual entry fee if not part of a Unit team is £10. All cheques are to be made payable to the RAYC.

7. Training Day. The training day on Wed 27 Jun 18 will start at 1000hrs and is intended to allow double hander crews to hone their sailing and racing skills on the 2000s prior to the Regatta. Safety boat cover will be provided along with coaching from the one top Service sailors who competes internationally.

8. Call-Over/Briefing. Call-over will be at 0900hrs on Thu 28 Jun 18 at AISTC(S), Thorney Island. The sailing/race briefing will take place at 0915hrs.

9. Clothing. AISTC(S) provide buoyancy aids, wet suits, spray tops and wet boots. A peaked hat and sunglasses are recommended to combat the sun. Sandals and flip flops may not be worn in the boats.

10.Travel. Serving personnel who are competing should be able to obtain travel warrants for sport to offset costs through their own units.

11.Accommodation. Units/Individuals who require accommodation at Thorney Island should indicate their requirements on the Entry Proforma at Annex A. Accommodation is bunk bed and mattress therefore sleeping bags will be required. There is no authority to claim for non-military overnight accommodation.

2 12.Meals. Thorney Island messes operate Pay As You Dine (PAYD) facilities. Lunch bookings from the PAYD provider are taken in the mornings and delivered for lunch. There is also a self-catering kitchen at AISTC(S) and a convenience shop nearby.

13. RYA Level 1/Level 2 Start Sailing/Basic Sailing course. Individuals who wish to bid for the RYA Level 1/Level 2 Start Sailing/Basic Sailing course from 25 – 29 Jun 18 at AISTC(S) are to complete Annex B and return it to Maj Jed Cunningham at AISTC(S) NLT Fri 27 Apr 18. The cost to the individual is:

£50 course fees £10 ASA membership (unless already a member) £6 per night accommodation (sleeping bags required)

14. A deposit of £10 will be requested on receipt of Annex B, the application form. Joining Instructions will be sent out to applicants on receipt of the deposit with payment methods for the remittance.
