Men’s Soccer: Santa Ana Wins Second Consecutive State Title; Record Seventh Overall

FRESNO, CA – Santa Ana College won its second consecutive men's state soccer title and record seventh overall as the Dons (24-2-1) downed previously undefeated Santa Rosa Junior College (23-1), 3-1, in the championship game of 2005 California Community College Commission On Athletics Soccer Championships held at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, CA, Sunday. Hugo Ramos and Omar Ramos each scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Dons. Abraham Cruz, who was named the men’s state soccer championships most valuable player, put Santa Ana up 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 41st minute. The Dons were awarded the penalty kick following a handball call (yellow card) on Bear Cubs' midfielder Marcos Shields inside the penalty box. Cruz ricocheted a shot off the right post that hit the shoulder of Bear Cubs' goalkeeper Tebias Mason before crossing the endline to give the Dons the lead. Two minutes later, out of frustration, Shields picked up his second yellow card that resulting in an ejection after tripping a Santa Ana player from behind giving the Dons a man advantage to start the second half. The Dons took advantage of the extra man and made it 2-0 when Omar Ramos scored off of Hugo Ramo's pass on a breakaway goal. The Bear Cubs were forced to play two men down when Brady Nunes was dismissed from the match after receiving his second yellow card in the 72nd minute. Hugo Ramos gave the Dons a 3-0 lead eight minutes later when he collected a double pass from Richardo Juarez and Omar Ramos on the left side to beat Mason. Despite being shorthanded Santa Rosa made it 3-1 when Britt Travis' headed in Antonio Gudino's corner kick in the 82nd minute. - more - Exercise Science Department  1530 W. 17th Street  Santa Ana, CA 92706  P: (714) 564-6900  F: (714) 564-6969 2-2-2-2-2 Santa Ana Records Second Consecutive State Title; Record Seventh Overall

Travis’ goal was the first given up by the Dons in the previous four state championship matches dating back to last year. Cesar Aceves gave up the lone goal for the Dons while stopping five Bear Cubs' shots while Mason recorded two saves in goal for Santa Rosa. Last year, Santa Ana (19-0-4) won its sixth California Community Colleges state title with a 3-0 shutout over Cerritos College in the finals of the 2004 Citi California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Men's Soccer Championship held on Sunday, December 5 at Oxnard College. Two weeks later the Dons won their second National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national title edging out Herkimer County College (NY), who won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national title, for the top spot. The Dons will learn as early as Monday (December 12) if the win was enough to give them their second straight NSCAA national title. Santa Ana began the season atop the NSCAA Division III men's soccer poll, but slipped to fourth midway through the season.
