Job Purpose To work as part of the Public Policy team to maximise the external profile and influence of the CIPD.

Key accountabilities

1 To work with the Public Affairs Manager and Public Affairs Officer, assisting them in the delivery of public affairs activity, including attending external events and assisting with building relationships in the public policy environment.

2 To work with the Public Affairs Officer to disseminate weekly monitoring reports, appropriate to the needs of internal stakeholders.

3 To assist the team to proactively spot opportunities to engage opinion formers in the work and views of the CIPD including drafting and disseminating briefings in a timely manner.

4 To work with the Public Policy Advisers to help develop engagement for specific areas of policy work as appropriate and under the guidance of the Public Affairs Manager.

5 To arrange and be prepared if needed, to attend briefing meetings with parliamentary and governmental stakeholders to promote CIPD messages and to support the attendance of the relevant Public Policy Adviser through helping to put together key briefing materials.

6 To help manage the CIPD public policy blog, public policy web pages and the new public policy newsletter, working with the Public Affairs Officer and Policy Advisers to upload topical content on a range of issues on a regular basis

7 To assist with the development and delivery of events which support public policy and public affairs objectives such as Parliamentary seminars or party conference events under the guidance of the Public Affairs Manager.

8 To work with the Public Affairs Manager and Public Affairs Officer to ensure that contact databases are maintained and kept up to date and that accurate records of engagement are kept.

9 To assist the Public Affairs Officer when needed, with the management and editing of the regular CIPD public policy consultation responses, including using online survey tools.

10 To assist in maintaining the public policy area of the CIPD website as an up-to-date resource for CIPD members and policy stakeholders. 11 To undertake other administrative tasks necessary to support the smooth and effective operation of the Public Affairs team specifically and wider Public Policy team generally.

Knowledge, qualifications and experience

You will be of graduate calibre, with excellent written ability and verbal understanding. You should be able to produce written materials of a high standard for a variety of audiences. A professional manner is also essential for when you represent the CIPD at external events.

You will have excellent project management skills and be highly organised. Work is often to tight deadlines, so you must be able to work well under pressure. You will often have a number of projects competing for your time so an ability to prioritise and manage expectations is necessary.

You must be able to demonstrate a real interest in public affairs and knowledge and understanding of the workings of government and Parliament. Alongside this you will be interested in the world of work, and understand the relationship between people management and development and organisational performance.

Nature and scope

You will form part of the busy Public Policy team and will play an active role in assisting with our public affairs activity. There will be frequent occasions when you will be the first port of call for national politicians and key policy makers. Your role includes responsibility for helping to organise events in Westminster and at the political party conferences.

Your work will contribute to a joined-up approach to ensure the CIPD’s thought leadership is visible in the press and parliament. You will need a good understanding of the CIPD business and a sharp political antennae to spot opportunities and risks to the organisations reputation. As the world of public affairs evolves you should keep on top of the latest ways to use the press, social media and other online resources to further our public affairs objectives.

The CIPD policy work is going from strength to strength and the Public Affairs Assistant will need to demonstrate flexibility, proactivity and strong organisational skills. You should also be a strong communicator, both verbally and in your written work.

From time-to-time the job requires some out of hours and off-site work, either in attending conferences or similar events.
