Doing What We Say in Teacher Education. Or Not.

Unrealistic Diversity “Infusion” Expectations for Teacher Educators

(Empirical paper in progress)

Teacher preparation programs (TPPs) across the United States frequently assert that Multicultural Education (MCE) theory and praxis is "infused" throughout their programs. Furthermore, TPPs often request/expect professors, who have never studied MCE or who have studied it in a cursory manner, to do the infusing – and thus prepare future teachers to implement MCE tenants in their classrooms. This article tells a story about MCE in a TPP from three perspectives. To prepare to do so, the authors applied a self-study through narrative inquiry design (Smith, 2006) to problematize the way our TPP "infuses" MCE and to examine our complicity in the marginalization of MCE in our TPP. Our findings show an insufficient infusion of MCE in our TPP, and an existing presupposition that infusion exists without substantive policy change. We conclude with implications for doctoral programs, TPPs and those who support the theory and praxis of MCE. We also challenge the larger field of MCE and TPP's, to effectively address the implications of our findings through praxis.

Suburban or Sub-Urban? Pre-Service Teacher's Deficit Perceptions of the Suburban Poor and Education in the Metro Atlanta Area.

(Empirical paper in progress)

This empirical study examines the rise of families with lower socioeconomic status from the 1980's to present in Clayton, DeKalb, and North Henry County Georgia, once middle class suburbs south and east of the city of Atlanta; deficit perceptions held by pre-service teachers regarding education and students in these communities; and whether those perceptions can be changed.
