40 P R O U D Y E AR S O F F I S H I N G T R AD I T I O N

PRESIDENT ~ TERRY CHENOWTH

ow 40 Years! I have been a Bassmaster for about 15 years. Several years Wback in the late 70’s. I won’t mention names but there are a few of you that were members back then. I have a copy of a 1977 newsletter that my brother saved; a few are still fishing with us today. I rejoined in 1998 and I was just looking back on the ’98 roster I have saved. Like now we were at 50 members, of those 21 are still Bassmasters. Two thirds of them have left. Over the years people have come and gone. I can’t count the number of people that have come in and later drifted away. But the Bassmasters remains a strong Club. What keeps us going at a level unmatched by other clubs? Is it the tournaments and the caliber of our anglers? Maybe, But all the clubs have those.

What makes the Bassmasters different? In my opinion it’s the family events we have every year. It’s at these events we get to know each other better. It’s here we share time with each other’s families. It’s here we become friends. I still talk with some of the Bassmasters that have left and I consider them lifelong friends. What I am getting at here is that being a Bassmaster means more that you are a bass angler. You are family. We talk a lot about participation and that means not just fishing the tournaments, but the events also. If you attend our events you know what I am talking about. If you don’t attend them you should, you are missing out.

I hope you all had a fun evening at our 2010 Bassmasters Banquet. I have a few people I would like to thank that really assisted me. The table center pieces were made by Vicki Becker, Donalea Brant and Lauralea Louis. Ed & Maureen Marr did shopping for the door prizes. Ed & Cheryl Byrd put together the program. Regina Seaberg poured over countless pictures to put our 2010 DVD. Thanks to you all.

I all want to thank the Bassmasters for letting me be President this year. I am extremely honored to do this job on our Clubs 40th anniversary year.

See You at the Chili Cook-off

VICE PRESIDENT ~ BUD ‘RED HAT’ BRANT

OW, 40 Years! I would be willing to bet in 1971 when the founding Wmembers first envisioned the San Diego Bassmasters, they had no idea

SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS PAGE 2 JANUARY 2011 what they were starting. But now, 40 years later, with the hard work and dedication of a lot of people the San Diego Bassmasters has become the best bass fishing club in San Diego.

With this being a milestone year, I am planning on making this 40th year a very special celebration. We are already working the on the banquet location and I should have a nice venue secured within the next few weeks. Keep in mind, there are a lot of other activities though out the year and it is imperative that every member does their part in participating in the monthly events so that the club has a successful year and banquet.

VICE PRESIDENT (CONTINUED)

Your first opportunity to participate in a club activity is the Chili Cook Off. We will have more details at the January meeting, but be prepared to bring your best pot of chili and/or a yummy homemade treat for a dessert auction. Also, weather permitting; we will enjoy a warm fire after judging is complete.

I am asking every member to go through their photographs and please bring any past or present pictures you have to the meeting or you can email the photos to [email protected]. Any pictures provided will be scanned and be returned promptly.

With everyone’s support and cooperation we will have a great year and 40th year. See you on the water

TREASURER ~ FRANK ‘THE KNEE’ NEUGEBAUER

ere we are! We are all in FIRST PLACE. That is the good news; better news is Hyou will continue to hold that place until February. Live it, Love it, and then do what it takes to keep the drive alive. There will be fifty of us trying to keep that position but only one of us will move ahead. Who will that be? You or me? I know I will be out there trying to make it happen. I also know that the rest of you will be trying to make me stay at home and make Bill Dance and Roland Martin look good on TV. Good Luck!!!!

The new year gives us a chance to look back on this past year…Bud is club champion again. The Top Six Team has all the skills needed to bring that trophy back to the club and we need to make every effort to make that happen. We all need to support that effort in every way we can. Details will follow, as the tournament gets closer.

I am looking forward to serving as the Treasurer once again. I am excited to be on the Board this year especially during the 40th year of this club’s existence. I consider it an honor and a privilege to hold this office in your club. This year’s Board is motivated to make this the best year ever. I am also privileged to have served with the former Board, who’s members that looked after the club’s best interests. I am very excited to be serving with this year’s Board as well.

Before I get to the numbers, which is usually what I am all about, I do want every member to know what I think the San Diego Bassmasters is all about. I cannot re-state anything that has already been said any better than by those that have previously said those things. Last year we had people that either gave out of their pocket or out of their personal inventory of fishing stuff to pump up the bank balance. One individual or made a contribution to a scholarship fund for no other reason than the fact that they could. These contributions were given with the intention of being anonymous. They were not given with the intention of getting recognition. These are the actions of the people, and their character that makes up your fellow Bassmasters.

I do want to say that being a part of this club is much more to me than being a part of any other fishing club. I do believe that not only am I fishing against the best bass fishermen in the county, I am fishing against the best people I have ever met. I have made a lot of friends since joining this club. I also have seen how this club and its members rally around each other and take care of each other in a time of need. I am proud and honored to part of this organization.

Well if you made it this far here are the numbers: Checking balance is $1,469.37. I have a couple of people that owe for 2010 items that I am AGREVSSIVELY COLLECTING ON. If you are one of those people do it for yourself, not for me, pay the money. My projection is we will be paying about $1,600.00 forward for the 40 th Banquet. I want to also recognize Zoé Gardner at this point. When I took over the Treasurer position last year she was very adamant, and rightly so, about the money the 2009 Board was paying forward to the 40th Banquet. She advised me that she wanted a correct accounting of the money for 2009 and it was not to be considered a competition. Zoé was only half right…it is always a competition!

TREASURER (CONTINUED)

The 2010 Board went on a mission to beat 2009 and did so, with the benefit of knowing the number to beat. I believe in 2011, in its 40th year of existence, the San Diego Bassmasters will continue to be something special and something we should all be honored to be a part of. We are by any definition you care to choose, the best fishing club in San Diego

Pull the your belts tight, Check all your gear. And in the words of Robin Trower (young guys look that up), “Close your eyes, its about to begin”.

TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN ~ Greg ‘Slim’ Gardner

elcome, San Diego Bassmasters, to our 2011 tournament year. It’s gonna be a good one, Wand as Tournament Director I will do my best to keep it organized and on track. We started our process this season by having our tournament planning meeting on December 16th at Angler’s Marine. A lot of our members showed up and participated in the discussion. This it the proposal that we came up with and thanks to all of you who were there.

Jan. 29 Diamond Valley (Money tournament) - Draw Feb. 26 El Cap Mar. 12 Hodges Apr. 15/16 Lake Havasu May 27 Otay June 24/25 Lake Roosevelt July 15 El Cap –night tournament Aug. 12 Otay – night tournament Sept. 16/17 Lake Havasu Oct. 8 El Cap Nov. 5/6 Lower River (Sat/Sun) Nov. 19 Tournament of Champions

We will discuss and vote on our schedule at our January meeting. We will also go over rules and discuss any changes. It looks to be an exciting year for us. I especially like the proposed trip to Roosevelt. Myself and Zoé just watched a copy of the F.L.W. September tournament at Roosevelt and am looking forward to being there. The fishing will be excellent in June.

My tournament team this year will be Ed Marr and Josh Rhodes, and I have had several volunteers who offered to help. Thank you all!

That’s all for now – see you at the meeting

DON’T FORGET:

1) BRING EXTRA MONEY TO PAY FOR YOUR INSURANCE AND FEDERATION MEMBERSHIP 2) GET A NEW FISHING LICENSE BEFORE THE NEXT TOURNAMENT

MEMBERSHIP ~ JOSH BULLER

I would like to start off the New Year by thanking all of you who voted me into the position of Membership Chair. I will do my best job for all of you and for our club. This year we will be welcoming Jeff Manning back to our tournaments, meeting and events. Jeff will be filling the 50th spot on our roster. If memory serves, Jeff is a top 12 contender every year and I am sure is planning on returning to that form in 2011. I will continue to interview SDB members as a part of my monthly letter. I plan on asking questions that are heavily focused on fishing techniques, locations and tips. Since I procrastinated and did not get an interview done this month, I will share some of my knowledge that has been passed on to me with all of you. 1. If you are in a slump at El Cap go park next to Terry for a few hours. 2. If you need a big fish at Otay, Josh Roads is holding duck fishing seminar next week after the meeting. 3. If you are feeling like you have it all figured out and need a slice of humble pie, go cast on the breaking fish at the buoy line at Otay and watch Bud catch two limits while 10 other boats blank. 4. If you are feeling a little run down and need to recharge the batteries then you can watch Ed Byrd sit the whole day, never stand up, and catch a winning limit while doing it. 5. And finally, if you feel that your back boater is taking you water, Watch Ed Marr fish up current at the river for 3 days and employ the same tactic whenever needed. I hope you find these tips helpful in 2011. I look forward to getting to know you all better this year. Happy New Year!

FISH TALES ~ DORIS COOK

CLOWARD INJURES HIS BACK!

Keith and Stacey Cloward missed the banquet as Keith strained his back, ended up with a bulging disc and a two-day hospital stay. He was confined to bed rest for two weeks and has just recently started to try to walk again. He will be off work for another four to six weeks. We are pulling for you to get that back in shape in time to start the 2011 fishing season.

PATRICK TRYON GRADUATES!

Patrick Tryon graduated from San Diego State University on December 18th with a degree in Public Administration. He will get to walk with the graduating class of 2011 in May, but will already have his diploma. He told me he went to Chico State for two years prior to starting at SDSU, and shortly after he left, Chico started a competitive fishing team. Patrick works at Olive Garden in La Mesa in addition to running “Boatdacious’ with his friend Spencer Davidson. The company specializes in advanced boat cleaning products and has been in operation for a year and a half. Way to go Patrick!

TWO MEMBERS RETURNING!

I just heard, from a reliable source, that Jeff Manning and Jim Davis would be returning to active membership in time for the 2011 fishing season. Welcome back, guys!

FISH TALES - CONTINUED

UPDATE ON TOMMY!

Many of you have heard that Zoé Gardner’s godson, Tommy Johnson was in a very serious auto accident on December 3rd, outside of Palm Springs. He sustained sever injuries and is still at the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Desert Regional Center in Palm Springs. He is still in a coma, but is currently breathing on his own, although sometimes labored. His fever is under control and the brain has stopped swelling. He was recently fitted for a chest and back brace, which will be used at a later date. Logistics are being worked out to enable moving him to San Diego in a week or so. Zoé is hoping he can be moved to Sharp, Chula Vista to enable her to keep a close eye on his care and progress. If not they are hopeful that it will be in a Sharp facility. Please keep Tommy and his family in your prayers as he continues to recover.

ED & CHERYL OFF AGAIN BUT COME TO A SUDDEN STOP!

Ed and Cheryl Byrd took time out from their golf games while in a time-share in the Phoenix area to have lunch with Gary Wheeler, our president in 1979. Gary left the jewelry business after his move to Arizona and is currently in real estate, which has been very successful for him. While in Phoenix, Ed and Cheryl went on a hot air balloon ride, checked out lakes Pleasant and Canyon, and ran into Brandon Hoffman in the Bass Pro Shop in Mesa. Unfortunately, the next night, they also ran into a Dodge pickup truck that made a left turn in front of them. Cheryl’s car was totaled, but fortunately there were no serious injuries, just some bumps and bruises.

DR, JESSOP DIES!

Many of you may not be familiar with Dr. David Jessop, but you can certainly relate to some of his accomplishments in the hunting and fishing world. Dr. Jessop, 99 died of natural causes in his home on December 8 th. One way he benefited the fishing community was when he teamed with Orville P. Ball, O.W. (Junior) Todd and William P. Elser to bring Florida-strain largemounth bass to Upper Otay in 1960. This and other contributions to the sport of bass fishing gave him the honor of being inducted into the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, in the Hall of Champions. He was also a former California Sportsman of the Year, as well as a two-time chairman of the San Diego County fish and Game Advisory Commission.

CRIPPEN CLAN EXCITEMENT!

It’s Christmas Eve, the entire Crippen family is seated around the table after finishing a delicious meal, and ready to go out the door to church, when MR ROMANTIC (aka Darryl) hands Debe a Christmas card then drops to one knee. He asked her to marry him again on their 40th anniversary in July. It came as such a surprise it took Debe all of 30 seconds to say yes followed by numerous hugs and kisses. How sweet it is! Way to go, Darryl! What an exciting year this is going to be, all this plus the San Diego Bassmasters’ 40th year anniversary.

SAD NEWS!

Our sympathy goes out to Gail Brown whose 101½-year-old grandmother passed away on Tuesday, December 27th. Gail is the wife of member-at-large, Lynn Brown who moved to Texas.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

After finishing my December Fish Tales, I discovered I hadn’t mention any upcoming birthdays. In checking my list none of our members had a December birthday. Juan Collins celebrates his birthday on New Year’s Day, as our sole January birthday. Have a good one, Juan.

To share your Fish Tales, please contact Doris Cook at [email protected] or phone (619) 462-4708.

Happy New Year to all! May your New Year’s resolutions include good fishing and lots of lunkers!

Tournament Director Keith Cloward congratulated Terry Chenowth for winning the Tournament of Champions with 3 fish around 6.60 lbs.

At the River, Patrick Tryon won big fish and 3rd place. He and Spencer were getting fish all over the place, on all kinds of lures during pre-fish then struggled a little more during the tourney but managed double limits.

Ed Bryd won 2nd place, fishing with Cheryl. The fished mainly in Martinez, where Ed got his limit by 7:30 then went the rest of the day without improving it. At one point he was retrieving a rattletrap 10 feet from the boat when a fish hit it. Cheryl netted it then the rattletrap fell out of the fish's mouth. His last fish also hit right by the boat.

Zoe Gardner won. She and Greg caught a lot of fish, on cranks, wacky senkos, and jerkbaits. In her absence Greg accepted the award for her.

Harold Stevens ran the election, with help from Buck Billock and Marshall Martin.
