Literary Devices- techniques or tools to help you write 1. Simile- figurative language that makes a comparison of two unlike things using “like” or Pun “as” Example: She was as fast as a cheetah on the field.
2. Metaphor- figurative language that makes a comparison which does not use “like” or “as” Example: Our dad is the glue that holds our family together.
3. Personification- figurative language that gives an inanimate object or animals human qualities Example: The tree waved hello as we passed by.
4. Hyperbole- figurative language that is an exaggeration Example: My backpack weighs a ton!
5. Alliteration- repetition of initial consonant sounds Example: The snake slid, slithered and slipped through the grass.
6. Onomatopoeia- words that imitate sounds Example: Hiss, hiss. Pow! Bang!
7. Pun- A play on words; the humorous use of a word/phrase to suggest its different meanings. Example: Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He’s all right now.
