DNA Model Project s1

DNA Model Project

Objective: To create a structurally accurate model of a DNA molecule.

Instructions: You must create a 3D model of DNA. It may either stand on its own, or hang from the ceiling. You may construct the model out of any materials that you choose. The model must accurately show:

1. A 3D double helix structure of DNA (10 base pairs) 2. Correct base pairing (A-T, C-G) 3. The sugar-phosphate backbone 4. Correct hydrogen bonding between nitrogen base pairs

Name ______Date ______Period ______

Nitrogen bases (rungs) Nitrogen bases are coded and Nitrogen bases are coded but Nitrogen bases are not coded or correctly paired. Appropriate incorrectly paired or inaccurate paired and no hydrogen bonds are number of hydrogen bonds hydrogen bonding 3 pts. shown 1pt. shown 5 pts. Sugars and Phosphates Deoxyribose and phosphates are Deoxyribose and phosphates are Railings (sides) are part of model, (railings) correctly represented, with represented with alternating but not shown in alternating alternating colors or shapes and colors or shapes, but nitrogen colors or shapes. 1pt. nitrogen bases only coming from bases are attached at random. sugars. 5pts. 3pts.

Model Likeness to DNA Model is a 3D twisted ladder. Model is 3D, but flat – not a Model is not 3D 1 pt. 5 pts. twisted ladder. 3 pts.

DNA Structure Key Present and accurately identifies Present and complete, but fails to Present, but not complete. sugar, phosphate and each accurately identify sugar, Missing items identifying nitrogen base present. 5pts. phosphate and each nitrogen base components of DNA helix 1 pt. present 3 pts Completeness At least 10 nitrogen base pairs Less than 10 base pairs (6 -9) Minimal number of base pairs included in the model to show included in the helix model. 3pts. (less than 5) included in the understanding and concept. 5pts. model. 1 pt.

Neatness/Effort Neat, Organized, Color coded Neat and organized but lacks Disorderly, lacks color coding and demonstrates satisfactory color coding and/or insufficient and appears rushed without effort . 5 pts. effort 3 pts. satisfactory effort put forth 1 pt. .
