REPORT ON THE WORLD VETERINARY DAY HERD HEALTH ACTIVITY IN KAJIADO COUNTY ON 29TH APRIL 2017

The veterinary Students Association (VSA) with the support of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM) and the Department of Clinical Studies (CSD) participated in the joint Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA), Commonwealth Veterinary Association(CVA) and University Of Nairobi international Scientific conference and the 16th World Veterinary Celebrations in Kajiado.

This activity took place on Saturday the 29th of April, 2017 and involved 50 veterinary students mainly drawn from the 4th year group. The students were distributed into the five stations spread throughout the county; each station had 10 students, a Veterinary surgeon and an animal health assistant drawn from the county.

The farmers’ turnout was impressive and the animals were uncountable. The activity undoubtedly exposed the students to field experiences and enhanced their practical skills they were able to practice the theory learned in class. In their various small groups the students attended to clinical cases, dewormed and vaccinated all animals present (cattle, sheep, goats and dogs). Cattle were vaccinated against Foot and mouth (FMD), goats against contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) while dogs were neutered and vaccinated against Rabies.

The activity was a success, for this we wish to thank the Principal CAVS, Dean FVM and Chairman CSD for their support. Much thanks also to the National secretariat KVA and Kajiado county government for providing us with an opportunity to learn.

A. The quadrivalent FMD vaccine was in use (Type A,O, SAT 1 and SAT 2)

B. Other conditions observed included:

 Squamous cell carcinoma of the eye,

 Emaciation, rectal prolapse,

 Keratoconjuctivitis (pink eye),

 Complete fracture of the radius and ulna,

 Canine demodecosis and

 Transmissible Venereal Tumor in four males.

C. The dog neutering section was led by Prof. Mande of UoN, assisted by:

1. Dr Wamaita (MSc student UoN),

2. Ombati (KSPCA),

3. Dr Roges M Cap (Sercombe clinic) and
