COURSE OUTLINE Required Textbook: Algebra: Structure and Method by Houghton Mifflin. Chapters Covered: Chapter 1: Introduction to Algebra Chapter 2: Working with Real Numbers Chapter 3: Solving Equations and Problems Chapter 4: Polynomials Chapter 5: Factoring Polynomials Chapter 6: Fractions **Subject to change

CLASS REQUIREMENTS 1) Each student is required to bring the following items every time the class meets. a) Class textbook. b) Pencil (preferably mechanical with extra lead) and eraser or pencils sharpened before class. c) Pen (no metallic or pastel colors). d) Color pencils. e) Highlighter f) Planner 2) All papers turned in must have the student’s first and last names, date and the per # in the upper right hand corner. All papers should be labeled with the work and pages used. All papers will have the answers in the answer column unless specified by the instructor. All students must have pencils sharpened or mechanical pencil and paper before the bell rings. All work must be done in pencil. 3) All work must be shown for the student to earn full credit. 4) No hall passes will be issued to the restroom except for medical reasons or emergencies. Use the bathroom before the start of class. 5) Sharing of books is not permitted. 6) Students are expected to be punctual to class. Tardiness will be dealt with through the Dean’s office. 7) No calculators are permitted. Students using a calculator will receive a zero for the assignment and will be referred to the Dean’s office. 8) Students are expected to follow all of The Alemany High School Honor Code.

GRADING 1. Work will be assigned each day. Any work not finished in class AUTOMATICALLY becomes homework due at the beginning of the next class."Assignment/Homework" may include notes as well as assignments. Students may need to complete the assignment at home if not finished in class. Class notes must accompany all homework assignments. Justified absences are the only excuse for not having the notes. 30% of the student’s overall grade will be the Assignment/Homework grade. 2. Projects, and reports are to be done over a longer period and must be in on time for full credit 15% of the student’s overall grade will be the Project/Report average. 3. Students will have quizzes. These quizzes reinforce skills previously learned in class. 15% of the student’s overall grade will be the Quiz average. 4. Participation is an important part of the learning process. Tally points are given every time the student participates. Earning the average number of PART pts, based on all the students across all of the Algebra sections, will earn the student full credit in this % of the student's grade. 5% of the student’s overall grade will be the Participation grade. 5. Students may expect chapter tests which cover material previously taught in class. 20% of the student’s overall grade will be the Test average. 6. Students may have a Quarter Exam (Midterm) which covers material previously taught. A Midterm is worth 2 Test Grades 7. Students should expect a Final Exam at the end of the semester which covers all material previously taught. 15% of the student’s overall grade will come from the FINAL grade.

Grades in this class will be based on the WEIGHTED GRADE system described. That means that each and every aspect of your grade is to you. In this class, the standard grading scale will apply. This scale is: a. 90-100 = A b. 80-89 = B c. 70-79 = C d. 60-69 = D e. Below 60 =Fail 8. It is essential to bring ALL materials and be ready to work every day. 9. Late work is accepted at a discounted rate. It is important to check with the teacher if you wish to make up any work. Justified absences are given full credit. It is important to remember that chapter work should be made up before the chapter test. Students can also check alemany.org for any assignments. All assignments will be listed and updated weekly. In the case of "Late Work" proper labeling of the assignment is critical. “Blue Cards” will be filled out and placed on the podium before class. “Blue Cards” are filled out on Fridays only. 10. Students may be required to print their grade from Aeries Grading Program and bring it to class with a parent signature. 11. Tutoring is recommended for any student that has received a low quiz or test grade on the chapter recently studied. Tutoring is the only time the grades can be reviewed. Tutoring is also recommended for any student struggling with any part of the chapter we are currently studying. 12. Students are expected to read the front board daily, write all present and upcoming assignments in their daily planner, and check the homework and grades online weekly. 13. With all due consideration to the above, the final determination of the student’s grade rests with the professional judgment of the teacher. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR 1. Students are expected to abide by the Alemany High School Honor Code, which is upheld in this course. This will promote an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Students are expected to be punctual, respectful, and courteous. 2. In order to guarantee all the students in my classroom the excellent educational climate they deserve, I will not tolerate any student stopping me from teaching, nor any student stopping another from learning. Therefore, in my classroom, I am utilizing the following discipline plan:  Follow directions.  Be to class on time and in your assigned seat before class begins.  Be ready to work when class begins.  Bring completed assignments and all materials to class each day.  Raise hand to speak and wait to be called on.  Follow the rules and regulations of The Alemany High School Honor Code. 3. Students should use class time wisely. That is, ask questions, gain clarification, practice the skill and check for understanding. 4. Consequences for inappropriate behavior include: 1.verbal correction; 2. Name on the board; 3. after school detention; 4. parent contact, and finally 5. referral to dean or other administrator. 5. Cell phones and/or pagers are to be turned off and left in the student’s locker or backpack. Cell phones and/or pagers may not be kept in pockets or clothing. Any cell phones or pagers out, ringing or vibrating during class time will be confiscated and turned into the Dean’s office. Classroom Discipline Policy (Revised 2010) Tardies: Defined as: not being in your assigned seat and ready for work by the time the tardy bell begins to ring. The teacher will take the following actions: 1. First Tardy: Marked in teacher attendance record. Verbal warning. This is valid for only the first two week of the semester. 2. Second Tardy: Marked in school attendance. 15-minute detention to be served the day of the tardy regardless of the block schedule. The detention will be held after school. 3. Third Tardy: Marked in school attendance. Parental contact by phone and 30 minute detention to be sure the next school day. The detention will be served after school. 4. Fourth or more: Marked in school attendance. Administrative referral, parental contact, and other necessary actions taken by the school Please note: All detentions will be served when assigned regardless of the block schedule. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for carpool. Failure to show will result in a referral to the Dean’s Office.

Classroom Disruptions: Defined as: Interrupting the academic process. The teacher will take the following actions: 1. First offense: Verbal warning 2. Second offense: Verbal warning and possible seat change. The student may not be allowed to participate in the group activity. The report card may show a Needs to Improve (N) or Unsatisfactory (U) for Citizenship. 3. Third offense: Seat change, 15-minute detention, and parental contact. The detention will be held after school. The report card may show a Needs to Improve (N) or Unsatisfactory (U) for Citizenship. 4. Fourth or More offense: Parental contact and Administrative referral. The report card will show Unsatisfactory (U) for Citizenship. Please note: All detentions will be served when assigned regardless of the block schedule. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for carpool. Failure to show will result in a referral to the Dean’s Office.
