Critical Design Review (CDR)

It is time to conduct a peer CRITICAL DESIGN review of another project. Recall the presentation on idea generation techniques and that analysis was a crucial element in accepting potentially viable solutions to your team’s problem. The time has come for each of you to conduct a similar process with another team. Part of the product design process is to have internal or external peer reviews of all new products/processes. Each of you will be participating in this process and submit a written report to me as part of your course grade. This assignment is due by 1:00PM on Monday February 11, 2013.

Each student will be randomly assigned one project to critically review. As part of the review process, the following are expected: 1. Each reviewer will work independently 2. Each reviewer will conduct interviews with team members (individually or as a team) 3. Each reviewer will conduct interviews with faculty or industrial mentor, as necessary 4. Each reviewer will study the project and all activities undertaken by the team

The reviewer should prepare a report (minimum of 4 or more page assessment document - plus a cover page) detailing a critical review of the project and the project team activities. Some of the issues that should be examined by the reviewer are: 1. The team’s approach to the problem (research, design, analysis, redesign, marketing, sketches, etc.) 2. Team management, team functionality, team members’ participation, load sharing, etc. 3. Technical evaluation of understanding and achievements / design 4. Validation for use of software 5. Valiudation plans for use of hardware 6. What are their plans for risk, contingencies and future

The reviewer’s grade for this assignment depends on: 1. Reviewer’s understanding of the project (technical and organizational) 2. Thoroughness and clarity of the submitted review 3. Reviewer’s technical and organizational recommendations for continuation of the project 4. Justification of the critique

 Pat on the back approaches or overzealousness is not acceptable.  Copies of the report, with the reviewer’s name removed, will be provided to each group.  Reviewer’s names should only appear on the cover page. Project number and title should appear on all pages [as a footnote].
