Final World War II Diary Project

Due Date: Wednesday April 30th – beginning of class

Grade: 30 points given for requirements under #3 below and subtracted for items under #4

Requirements: 1. Each student will choose their own diary prompt AND have me approve your choice. a. Diary entries must be from a soldier’s or military support staff’s perspective b. You will need to pick your favorite or most interesting event that America was involved in from our study of the battles of World War II c. Next you will need to choose which side your soldier is fighting on (Allied: USA, England, or France; Axis: Germany, Italy, or Japan) d. Think about what experiences and emotions your character went through before you start writing as well as what factual information you will include

2. Each student will write a one-page diary entry on their prompt.

3. Each diary will thoroughly cover the following: a. Writing a.i. 6 pts: Creative and descriptive language – the reader should be able to understand the writer’s emotions a.ii. 6 pts: Appropriate historical information to the topic being written about a.ii.1. Check your factual knowledge about your topic before you write a.ii.2. Remember to use appropriate vocabulary terms a.iii. 6 pts: Thorough telling of the story of the writer’s experience during the chosen event a.iii.1. This needs to paint a picture of what your character is experiencing a.iii.2. You can’t die in the middle of your diary entry… b. Appearance b.i. 6 pts: Visual interest: a sketch, drawing, or glued on picture or object b.i.1. If you are attaching a printed picture – make it look like a newspaper clipping from the time b.ii. 3 pts: Neat handwriting on an unlined sheet of paper b.ii.1. A final draft of the diary entry should be written out and THEN written neatly on the final presentation b.iii. 3 pts: Should look like a diary entry: b.iii.1. NO title and DON’T make it into a letter b.iii.2. INCLUDE: date, intro like “dear diary,” and closure, etc.

4. Diary entries will NOT have the following: a. Crossed out writing b. Inappropriate language (ask me if you’re not sure)

Remember that this is the final version of a project that we have been working on for weeks. Before you write your final diary entry, please look back over your work for good points and ways to improve and remember the diary entries that we have read in class.
