THE CHESAPEAKE BULLETIN The Official Monthly Newsletter of Chesapeake Region Antique Automobile Club of America Volume 57 Number 8 August 2017 It's Official! Chesapeake Region Is Hosting The 2018 Eastern Spring Meet At Gettysburg's Wyndham Hotel By Bill Wurzell, Editor It was discussed and voted on at the July 9 membership meeting that Chesapeake Region would take up the challenge from AACA to host the 2018 Eastern Spring Meet to be held in Gettysburg, Pa., July 11-14, 2018. This event has been simmering on the back burner for a couple years. In 2015, when Presi- dent Paula Ruby invited then AACA President Donald Barlup to be a guest along with his wife at our annual banquet in November at Friend- ly Farm Restaurant, it was a sellout. President Barlup remarked at the excellent turnout of nearly 180 members, saying 'Chesapeake Re- gion should step up to the plate' and host a na- tional tour, or better yet, a national meet. Since that time, AACA 2016 President Rob- ert Parrish, and current AACA President Tom Cox have also challenged President Paula with similar pleas. It boiled over recently when Na- tional AACA had no region to host the 2018 Eastern Spring Meet; the die was cast! Okay, you say that’s great! But, why Gettsyburg in PENNSYLVANIA? Why not somewhere in the Chesapeake Region? A fair question. The major factor is, there really isn’t was also the chief organizer along with Tom President, Al Zimmermann, President Paula a venue that can accommodate this meet as Kenney for the 2016 National DeSoto Club Ruby, and past presidents, Gary Wilmer, and well as the Gettysburg area.

  • 1953 Desoto Cars Described
1953 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1953 DESOTO - GENERAL: This was the 25th anniversary for DeSoto, but no special models were offered. A new series, "Powermaster", debuted named to coincide with the L-Head Six it was named after. Gone were the DeLuxe and Custom. With this model, there were only two series, that and the Firedome. Also retired was the Suburban—a series that had no buyers now that station wagons and 4-door sedan taxis were popular. The 1953 DeSotos were similar in appearance to the 1952 car, yet the design had a major sheet metal revamp, but it was subtle and barely noticeable. It was much improved over the abrupt styling of 1952, but to most buyers, it went unnoticed. In a change, the front fender line extended front to rear and the back fenders were now integral with the body structure even though they bulged out at the front. The roof line now faded into the rear deck in a more pleasing fashion. Big news was the one-piece, curved windshield. The Club Coupe was now more Sportsman-like than the previous year's counterpart, boosting sales. Only the station wagon continued with 1952 fender styling. The Sportsman hardtop used the 1952 style roof structure with its three-piece rear window treatment, while the eight- passenger sedan used the 1952 body with the new one-piece curved windshield. The 1952 "toothy" grille added two more of those, now at eleven. Side chrome was more evident as Korean War demands abated. INNOVATIONS: All DeSotos received a one-piece curved windshield, originally pioneered by Chrysler in 1934 on the Airflow.

  • 1959 Desoto Cars Described
1959 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1959 DESOTO - GENERAL: The DeSoto remained virtually unchanged from the 1958 model year, except for trim and front fascia, where DeSotos had three air scoops built right into the bi-level front bumper. At the bottom was a full-width scoop. Above it, on either side of the license plate indentation, were two more. A rectangular cross-hatched grille insert stretched between the headlights. On the body sides, full-length sweep spears were narrower and redesigned. They took a dip behind the rear wheel openings and then curved upwards towards the tips of tall tailfins. The tri-cluster turret shaped taillight lenses were still there while a large double rear bumper with beauty panels between the top and bottom members was featured. After such a wonderful year in 1957, the recession was hammering the line very hard once again in 1959, so the powers that be at DeSoto were wise to keep new tooling to a minimum. Not only that, but this would be the final year for separate frame and body construction in all Chrysler products, so there was even more incentive to keep sheet metal changes to a minimum. 1959 would be the last season for DeSoto convertibles and station wagons. INNOVATIONS: Swivel buckets made their debut across the entire Chrysler Corporation line this year. 1959 FIRESWEEP SERIES MS1-L (8-Cylinder wedge-head V-8): There were no series nameplates on Firesweep models. The silver colored inserts—standard in Fireflite and Firedome—that ran along the body sides were an option. The four-door sedan had painted side window trim.

  • 1956 Desoto Cars Described
1956 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1956 DESOTO - GENERAL: The forward Look was now totally in place, with sweeping lines and fins in full evidence. At the front, a new perforated mesh grille with a large 'V' in the center dominated the front fascia – the "teeth" were gone. The new front bumper guards incorporated the parking lamps. At the rear, the taillight clusters were completely redone, with three tiers of turret-shaped lenses, and long, sweeping tail fin rear fenders replaced the older designs. A large, V-shaped emblem dominated the rear deck. Color sweep two-toning remained a feature, although the shape of the contrast panels was revised. Biggest news was that a four-door pillarless hardtop was introduced for both the Firedome and Fireflite. The DeSoto Hemi was enlarged yet again, this time to 330 CID, with the new Adventurer out further to 341 CID. INNOVATIONS: A 12-volt electrical system was adopted for all DeSotos. Pushbuttons were now used for the Powerflite automatic transmission controls. 1956 FIREDOME SERIES S23 (8-Cylinder Hemi): Cars in the Firedome series had "Firedome" in script on the front fenders, chrome plated headlamp hoods, and the top of the front fenders was unadorned. Standard side trim was a plain, full-length molding of consistent width, while "Color Sweep" two-tone paint was optional on hardtop models. This option was unique to the Firedome line. Station wagons could be ordered with a third type of color sweep pattern. Wagons also had chrome plated bolt-on type rear fins. Standard equipment included: full-time power steering, independent parking brake, safety rim wheels, "Oriflow" shock absorbers, constant speed electric windshield wipers, safety door latches, all-weather headlights, Super Highway taillamp clusters, and center-plane brakes.

  • 1958 Desoto Cars Described
1958 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1958 DESOTO - GENERAL: 1958 DeSoto styling was a minor facelift from the 1957 models. Changes included a honeycomb grille insert, a dip in the center of the middle grille bar and round parking lights at the outboard ends of the lower grille opening. Dual headlamps were standard on all models. For the first time, Fireflite, Firedome and Firesweep all offered an expanded model line including convertibles, hardtops and 4-door sedans, less station wagons. Wagons were only available in the Fireflite and Firesweep line. Eighty-six two-tone and 14 solid color schemes were offered for 1958. Biggest news was the introduction of the new "B" Series "corporate" V-8 engine, used across all lines except Chrysler. INNOVATIONS: The new "B" series V-8 with wedge-shaped combustion chamber-head. It was the first of the new generation "corporate" V-8s, available in 350 and 361 CID the new cylinder heads and the distributor in the front of the engine for easier service. A full-flow oil filter was standard. which featured a rigid, deep-skirt block; in-line overhead valves employing a single shaft in each cylinder head. Its weight dropped to 640 pounds; less than the DeSoto-only Hemi it replaced. DeSoto, Dodge and Plymouth shared the new engine, with Chrysler continuing to use their big 392 CID Hemi. 1958 FIRESWEEP SERIES LS1-L (8-Cylinder wedge-head V-8): This series continued to use the Dodge chassis. Body side trim was redesigned so that the upper molding ran at an angle to the upper corner of the tailfin.

1954 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1954 DESOTO - GENERAL: The annual model changeover for 1954 resulted in a DeSoto with the same basic styling as the 1953 model. Exterior changes were limited to revisions for trim moldings, grille, bumpers and taillights. Significant was thar the grille reverted to the nine-tooth look of '52 with parking lamps floating inside the grille outline. The front bumper guards were redesigned and looked a bit more massive. New step-down chrome moldings were placed on front fenders and doors. The rear fender side moldings now stretched completely to the rear of the cars and the gravel shields were redesigned. Headlight and taillight clusters were updated with the decorative bezels on top moving toward the "Frenched" look. Interiors were upgraded in both lines. Body colors expanded to 18 from 13 and included some metallic shades. A new, 2-speed fully automatic transmission was now offered and replaced the optional Fluid Drive units. Chrysler Corporation media said it would provide instant response with no lagging or lurching between shifts. For the Fire Dome V-8, the compression ratio was raised and larger diameter valves were installed in the Firedome V-8 as a running change late in the year. Horsepower/torque ratings jumped from 160 to 170 and torque from 250 to 355 ostensibly with the increase in compression ratio from 7.1 to 7.5:1. INNOVATIONS: The Powerflite 2-speed automatic transmission was introduced. It replaced the optional Fluid Drive and Fluid Torque Drive units. It had the industry's highest starting ratio and torque convertor multiplication ratio.
