1953 Desoto Cars Described 1953 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1953 DESOTO - GENERAL: This was the 25th anniversary for DeSoto, but no special models were offered. A new series, "Powermaster", debuted named to coincide with the L-Head Six it was named after. Gone were the DeLuxe and Custom. With this model, there were only two series, that and the Firedome. Also retired was the Suburban—a series that had no buyers now that station wagons and 4-door sedan taxis were popular. The 1953 DeSotos were similar in appearance to the 1952 car, yet the design had a major sheet metal revamp, but it was subtle and barely noticeable. It was much improved over the abrupt styling of 1952, but to most buyers, it went unnoticed. In a change, the front fender line extended front to rear and the back fenders were now integral with the body structure even though they bulged out at the front. The roof line now faded into the rear deck in a more pleasing fashion. Big news was the one-piece, curved windshield. The Club Coupe was now more Sportsman-like than the previous year's counterpart, boosting sales. Only the station wagon continued with 1952 fender styling. The Sportsman hardtop used the 1952 style roof structure with its three-piece rear window treatment, while the eight- passenger sedan used the 1952 body with the new one-piece curved windshield. The 1952 "toothy" grille added two more of those, now at eleven. Side chrome was more evident as Korean War demands abated. INNOVATIONS: All DeSotos received a one-piece curved windshield, originally pioneered by Chrysler in 1934 on the Airflow. All except the Sportsman received a one piece curved rear window as well. 1953 POWERMASTER SERIES S18 (6-Cylinder): The Powermaster took the place of the Deluxe, and taking on the trim and interiors of that model line. The L-Head Six continued to be the only power plant. For identification purposes, the word "Powermaster" was on both front fenders and there was no additional chrome trim, unlike the Firedome. Standard equipment on Powermaster included dual sun visors, dual two-speed electric wipers, directional signals with parking brake light, cigar lighter, stainless steel trim rings, illuminated glove box with lock, dual outside door locks, map light, counter balanced luggage compartment lid, illuminated luggage compartment, right and left front door arm rests, interior door locks and bumper guards front and rear. 1953 FIREDOME SERIES S16 (8-Cylinder Hemi): The Firedome was the V-8 model and it shared most features of the six- cylinder Powermaster series. It offered the same six body styles that had been available in 1952. Highlights included brakes with 12-inch drums, Cyclebond brake linings, Oriflow shock absorbers, coil front springs, waterproof ignition, full length water jackets, full pressure lubrication, air vent hood and an improved frame designed to resist twisting. Changes from 1952 included new combination tail, stop and backup lights and a gas cap positioned below the deck lid on the left side on the rear fascia. The words "FireDome V-8" appeared on both front fenders and the word "Eight" was set on the right side of the rear fascia, below the deck lid. A chrome trim slash was placed on the front fenders of all Firedome models except the eight-passenger sedan and the station wagon. Standard equipment mirrored the Powermaster, however, the FireDome has upscale interior fabrics in some models. MODEL/ENGINE I.D. DATA: Powermaster serial numbers. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: The DeSoto Adventurer experimental show car was on the show circuit in 1953. Chrysler purchased the Briggs Manufacturing Company this year for $35,000,000. This was the 25th anniversary for DeSoto, but no special models were offered. PRODUCTION: 130,404 DeSotos were built in 1953, an increase of almost 33,000 over 1953. See attached chart for production numbers. Continued – Copyright © Automotive History Preservation Society, All Rights Reserved. Contact: Librarian, PO Box 467, Perry MI or e-mail [email protected]. CAR IMAGES The 1953 Firedome Sportsman hardtop was the flashiest DeSoto next to the Convertible. It now sported a curved one-piece front windshield, but it retained the '52 three-piece rear. 4,700 were produced. The 1953 DeSoto Firedome Convertible looked a bit sharper for 1953. The result was a doubling of sales to 1,700. By 1953, the DeSoto Firedome 4-Door Sedan had caught up to their Olds and Mercury counterparts delivering 64,211 to their customers. CAR IMAGES Continued As the 4-door, the 1953 DeSoto 2-door Club Coupe was closer in looks to its competition, and a bit ahead in power. The result was 14,591 sold, better than twice as many as in the previous year. The 1953 DeSoto Firedome 8-passenger sedan was still hanging in there, but with only 200 sold, it would only last for another year. The 1953 DeSoto Firedome Station Wagon was still not a large seller, moving 1100 units. Continued – Copyright © Automotive History Preservation Society, All Rights Reserved. Contact: Librarian, PO Box 467, Perry MI or e-mail [email protected]. CAR IMAGES Continued The 1953 Powermaster 6 owners were happy that the Sportsman was available. Unfortunately, the sub-par performance of the 116 HP six did not entice many buyers. Only 1,470 were sold. The 1953 Powermaster 4-door was almost indistinguishable from its 8-cylinder counterpart. May were not put off by its tepid performance. The result was 33,644 deliveries. The 1953 Powermaster 8-passenger sedan was hard put to move spritely with only 116 HP. Regardless 225 were sold. Continued – Copyright © Automotive History Preservation Society, All Rights Reserved. Contact: Librarian, PO Box 467, Perry MI or e-mail [email protected]. CAR IMAGES Continued 1953 DeSoto Powermaster 2-door Club Coupes sold well, with over 8,000 delivered. Surely the new, airy lines - emulating the Sportsman - helped. The 1953 Powermaster Station Wagon was not very popular – with only 500 produced. Perhaps it was the $3,093 base price - more than a Firedome Sportsman. CAR STYLING CHANGES FOR 1953 The 1953 styling changes were subtle, but brought the DeSoto’s looks into the mainstream versus its competition. The tail lights were even more peaked and longer, with just a hint of a fin to them. Instead of being flush with the body, they stood off more. The bumper guards were very prominent. Of course, it was the wrap-around front and rear windows that dramatically modernized the car. Last the rear trunk was raised and yet still rounded. lining it up with its GM counterparts. STYLING Continued There were lots of subtle styling changes in the 1953 year. Here’s the significant ones: Hood scoop was more subtle and fit the rounded hood better. Fitted to all models. FireDome received a “V” under the DeSoto logo.

THE CHESAPEAKE BULLETIN The Official Monthly Newsletter of Chesapeake Region Antique Automobile Club of America Volume 57 Number 8 August 2017 It's Official! Chesapeake Region Is Hosting The 2018 Eastern Spring Meet At Gettysburg's Wyndham Hotel By Bill Wurzell, Editor It was discussed and voted on at the July 9 membership meeting that Chesapeake Region would take up the challenge from AACA to host the 2018 Eastern Spring Meet to be held in Gettysburg, Pa., July 11-14, 2018. This event has been simmering on the back burner for a couple years. In 2015, when Presi- dent Paula Ruby invited then AACA President Donald Barlup to be a guest along with his wife at our annual banquet in November at Friend- ly Farm Restaurant, it was a sellout. President Barlup remarked at the excellent turnout of nearly 180 members, saying 'Chesapeake Re- gion should step up to the plate' and host a na- tional tour, or better yet, a national meet. Since that time, AACA 2016 President Rob- ert Parrish, and current AACA President Tom Cox have also challenged President Paula with similar pleas. It boiled over recently when Na- tional AACA had no region to host the 2018 Eastern Spring Meet; the die was cast! Okay, you say that’s great! But, why Gettsyburg in PENNSYLVANIA? Why not somewhere in the Chesapeake Region? A fair question. The major factor is, there really isn’t was also the chief organizer along with Tom President, Al Zimmermann, President Paula a venue that can accommodate this meet as Kenney for the 2016 National DeSoto Club Ruby, and past presidents, Gary Wilmer, and well as the Gettysburg area.

  • 1959 Desoto Cars Described
1959 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1959 DESOTO - GENERAL: The DeSoto remained virtually unchanged from the 1958 model year, except for trim and front fascia, where DeSotos had three air scoops built right into the bi-level front bumper. At the bottom was a full-width scoop. Above it, on either side of the license plate indentation, were two more. A rectangular cross-hatched grille insert stretched between the headlights. On the body sides, full-length sweep spears were narrower and redesigned. They took a dip behind the rear wheel openings and then curved upwards towards the tips of tall tailfins. The tri-cluster turret shaped taillight lenses were still there while a large double rear bumper with beauty panels between the top and bottom members was featured. After such a wonderful year in 1957, the recession was hammering the line very hard once again in 1959, so the powers that be at DeSoto were wise to keep new tooling to a minimum. Not only that, but this would be the final year for separate frame and body construction in all Chrysler products, so there was even more incentive to keep sheet metal changes to a minimum. 1959 would be the last season for DeSoto convertibles and station wagons. INNOVATIONS: Swivel buckets made their debut across the entire Chrysler Corporation line this year. 1959 FIRESWEEP SERIES MS1-L (8-Cylinder wedge-head V-8): There were no series nameplates on Firesweep models. The silver colored inserts—standard in Fireflite and Firedome—that ran along the body sides were an option. The four-door sedan had painted side window trim.

  • 1957 Desoto Cars Described
1957 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1957 DESOTO - GENERAL: DeSoto models were announced October 30, 1956, less the Adventurer, which came two months later. All new styling and chassis engineering characterized 1957 DeSotos. Changes from 1956 included: new bodies that were lower and longer, new side trim and color sweep treatments, a massive new bumper grille combination, and new upswept rear fender tailfins. All Chrysler products went to a torsion bar suspension for 1957, called "Torsionaire" in advertising. The overdrive transmission was discontinued this year. A new entry level model was introduced, called the "Firesweep" series, that used the 1957 Dodge chassis and drivetrain under its skin. INNOVATIONS: Torsion bar front suspension, called “Torsion-Aire” and the Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission was introduced on Firedome and Fireflite DeSotos and big sister Chrysler as well as 14" tires/rims. Dual headlamps would become standard mid-year, when accepted by all states. 1957 FIRESWEEP SERIES S27 (8-Cylinder v-8): This new, lower-priced line helped increase DeSoto production during what would be known as a major recession year. Identification features for this line were "Firesweep" on the rear fender, a wide continuous metal band on the tops and side of the headlamp hoods, optional dual color "sweep moldings" or a standard trim treatment that had a molding starting at the rear of the car and extending forward across two-thirds of the front door. Standard features included: "Torsionaire Ride", "Oriflow" shocks, "Safety-Lock" door latches, "Total Contact" brakes and "Power-Tip" spark plugs. Firesweeps used Dodge sourced engines that were featured Polyspheric "semi-hemi" combustion chambers and 325 CID.

1956 DESOTO CARS DESCRIBED 1956 DESOTO - GENERAL: The forward Look was now totally in place, with sweeping lines and fins in full evidence. At the front, a new perforated mesh grille with a large 'V' in the center dominated the front fascia – the "teeth" were gone. The new front bumper guards incorporated the parking lamps. At the rear, the taillight clusters were completely redone, with three tiers of turret-shaped lenses, and long, sweeping tail fin rear fenders replaced the older designs. A large, V-shaped emblem dominated the rear deck. Color sweep two-toning remained a feature, although the shape of the contrast panels was revised. Biggest news was that a four-door pillarless hardtop was introduced for both the Firedome and Fireflite. The DeSoto Hemi was enlarged yet again, this time to 330 CID, with the new Adventurer out further to 341 CID. INNOVATIONS: A 12-volt electrical system was adopted for all DeSotos. Pushbuttons were now used for the Powerflite automatic transmission controls. 1956 FIREDOME SERIES S23 (8-Cylinder Hemi): Cars in the Firedome series had "Firedome" in script on the front fenders, chrome plated headlamp hoods, and the top of the front fenders was unadorned. Standard side trim was a plain, full-length molding of consistent width, while "Color Sweep" two-tone paint was optional on hardtop models. This option was unique to the Firedome line. Station wagons could be ordered with a third type of color sweep pattern. Wagons also had chrome plated bolt-on type rear fins. Standard equipment included: full-time power steering, independent parking brake, safety rim wheels, "Oriflow" shock absorbers, constant speed electric windshield wipers, safety door latches, all-weather headlights, Super Highway taillamp clusters, and center-plane brakes.
