Course Description: This course is intended to prepare students for a mathematics foundation course. We’ll study a variety of functions and their applications: linear, polynomial, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in MA080, or an appropriate score on the math placement test. Course Outcomes: Refer to my website OUTCOMES link.

Textbook: INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, Functions and Authentic Applications by Jay Lehmann, Prentice Hall, 5th Edition. Through MyMathLab (which is required) you have access to the electronic book. However, some students also like to buy the book to be able to study when they do not have access to the internet.

Required Access code: MyMathLab (MML), an online homework and tutorial system. In the College’s bookstore it has been bundled with a new textbook. It is also for sale separately online or in the college’s bookstore. (PLEASE! To register use YOUR complete name as shown in the college application!) MML INFO: IF YOU ARE RE-TAKING MATH 093, you can use the same MML code – Refer to a document in the MA093 page of my website (second row).

Buy the MyMathLab code and register; then use the following information to register into my MML courses. After you register into their system by using the code you bought, register in my course using the same Last and first name as used in the college’s application – no abbreviations please!

Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this course. You must bring it to each class! The following are recommended: TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84. A TI-84 will be used for class demonstrations. The following are not acceptable: TI-81, TI-85, TI-89, TI-92. Appendix B (online access only) will help you with many of the features of the graphing calculators TI-83-84.

Calculator Policy: During exams and quizzes, some problems may be required to solve without the calculator.

Make-up Policy: There are NO MAKE UPS for quizzes and exams. Late assignments will count for half its value.

Exams: There will be four exams. You will be given a zero for every exam missed and NO MAKE UPS will be given. The following applies to students who miss at most 3 classes in the semester If you do better on the final exam than on your worst test, this test grade will be replaced by your final exam grade.

Quizzes : No make ups will be given  Individual  Group: all graded will average to a quiz grade  Take home graded: all graded will average to a quiz grade – NO SPIRAL PAPER, please  Take home checked: all checked will average to a quiz grade – NO SPIRAL PAPER, please  Calculator: all graded will average to a quiz grade  Online: all graded will average to a quiz grade  PARTICIPATION QUIZ REQUIRED: solving problems on the board, helping with the overhead calculator in class, being one of the first 6 students in the class to complete a calculator assignment: graphs, calculations, etc. (15 points necessary for a 100% quiz grade)  OPTIONAL - ATTENDANCE to 15 sessions of any the following will drop a second lowest quiz Tutoring session in the Math/Science Center (1 session = 15 minutes), Math Talks (1 session = 45 minutes) (Take the form from my web page with you and let the professor/tutor sign every time you complete a session) This form must be turned in at the end of the semester.  FINAL QUIZ GRADE = AVERAGE OF (individual, group, take home, calculator, online, participation)  NOTE: When dropping 1 or 2 quizzes, there will be a limit increase on the average of all quizzes: AT MOST 4 percentage points

On an exam/quiz day: I will not provide calculators/pencils. You will not be permitted to share calculators. Cell phones should be OFF AND AWAY.

Homework: To master the material it is recommended to study on a daily basis! Questions on homework will be discussed at the beginning of each class; however, I recommend you come to my office or the Math Science Center to clarify your questions. Online portion  Register in MML and start doing the homework ASAP. There are handouts with instructions in my website.  Complete the assignments by the due date. Don’t wait until the last minute.  MML is like having a tutor at home: it shows solutions to similar problems. Make sure you learn the procedures  Solve problems on a paper showing all steps (as you will have to do in quizzes and exams)  Label each problem: section and problem number

My Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class. Three five-minutes tardy will be recorded as 1 absence. If you have to leave class early, let me know in advance and indicate ½ day in the attendance sheet. If you have to miss a class, send due-assignments with a classmate or e-mail them to me. Late assignments will count for ½ its value. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. Please ask one of your fellow classmates for assignments. To study the missed material, read the book and/or watch the videos in MML. Do not expect that during my office hour I summarize for you what you missed in class.

Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend all class sessions. In cases involving excessive absences from class, the instructor may drop the student from the class. An excessive absence is defined as one more absence than the number of classes per week during a fall or spring semester; the number of absences is pro-rated for accelerated sessions. Withdrawal and Refund Dates: It is the student’s responsibility to drop a course. Non-attendance of classes or failure to pay does not constitute official withdrawal. Delayed Opening or Closing of the College: On occasion, Montgomery College will announce a late opening or early closing of a specific campus or the entire college because of weather conditions or other emergencies.  If a class can meet for 50% or more of its regularly scheduled meeting time OR if the class can meet for 50 minutes or more, it will meet.  Montgomery College will always operate on its regular schedule unless otherwise announced.
