Illustrator & Vector Images 1) Illustrator is a vector program. 2) Vectors = lines 3) Vectors are mathematic. Vectors are described by numbers. 4) Illustrator is also an object-oriented drawing program. 5) Object-oriented means it is used to draw objects and not paint pixels. 6) The pen tool is used to draw objects (like circles) in Illustrator. 7) Photoshop has a pen tool too. 8) The pen tool draws curves & angles. 9) These curves are called Bezier curves. 10) Bezier curves give the designer a great deal of control. 11) Because images are based on Bezier curves, which are mathematic in nature, they can be resized smaller or larger and retain clarity & smoothness as long as they were created with Illustrator tools and NOT placed into the program. 12) Placed bitmap images DO NOT stay smooth at all sizes. Photoshop & Pixel Images 1) Photoshop is a pixel-based program 2) Pixels are very small “blocks” of color 3) The higher number of pixels in an image, the more clear it is. 4) That is why we look for LARGE image sizes when using Google images. 5) Images smaller than 100Kb are usually only for small web only graphics. They will be very pixilated if they are printed. 6) Pixilated images have bumpy edges and are blurry. 7) The more pixels an image has, the clearer it will likely be when printed. 8) High resolution 9) Animation can not be done in Illustrator. 10) A designer should always use thumbnails in the design process. 11) iPhoto is part of the iLife Suite and it is for managing digital photographs. 12) Proportionate means that the relationship of height and width remains the same. 13) .JPG is a file type used for digital photos. .JPG files may not look good when enlarged. 14) .PSD is a file type with layers in Adobe Photoshop. It stands for Photoshop Document.
