WHCC Hosts Second FFA Field Day

West Hills Community College Coalinga will host a second FFA Field Day at Farm of the Future on March 8 due to the favorable response the first event received in November.

“Our purpose with our second field to is to let all of the high school agriculture programs know about our agriculture programs that we offer here at West Hills,” said Sharon Freeman, ag instructor at Farm of the Future. “We are also interested in furthering the skills and abilities of the high school students so that they can continue to grow in the areas of academics and leadership.”

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and competitions will start at 8 a.m. A lunch of tri-tip BBQ, beans, salad, tortilla and a drink will be served for $5. There is no cost to register.

There are currently students from 13 high schools registered for the Field Day. Participants will come from all over the San Joaquin Valley, including Fresno, Tulare, Kingsburg, Chowchilla and Porterville.

Future Farmers of America competitions will include best informed greenhand, land judging, farm records, coop quiz and light horse judging. There will also be an ag mechanics competition with a participation cost of $15 per student. This particular event is limited to 15 teams.

All contests will follow Curricular Code, and participants must be in uniform from the waist up to participate. Buckles will be awarded to individuals who win first place and plaques for first-place teams. Ribbons will be awarded to those who earn first through fifth place. A sweepstakes trophy will also be awarded.
