COMMON NAME: Common Yarrow
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Archillea millefolium
ADAPTATIONS: Yarrow is found all over California, from the coast to the desserts to the timberline. Research has shown that each population develops its own genetic strategies for coping with their particular habitat.
FACTS: Yarrow is a very potent plant that is used today to relieve cold symptoms and gas pains. A fresh leaf inserted in the nostril will stop a nosebleed. Juice put in the eye would relieve redness according to Achilles. An oil from the plant when mixed with chamomile will prevent hair from falling out, as well as brighten and stimulate blond hair growth.
NATIVE USES: The Indians dried the entire plant and used it as a tea for rundown conditions and indigestion. The leaves were used as a poultice for rashes. An extract was made to heal wounds, bruises and horse’s boils.
GROWING FACTORS: Yarrow is found in the coastal sage scrub and chaparral environments. It flowers from mid-spring through summer. It will grow in any type of soil where the pH ranges from 4-8. Its water needs are small and it likes full sun.
