3. Monroe Parker Invitational Results The TJ Cross Country season got off to a great start on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the first meet of the season—the Monroe Parker Invitational at Burke Lake Park in Burke, VA—where the TJ teams were competing against 32 other schools from the Northern Virginia High School Athletic Region. Full results are available on Milestat.com at: Full Results and photos. The conditions were slightly on the warm side, but otherwise nearly perfect for spectators. The kids ran their hearts out. Lots of TJ runners (boys and girls) placed in the top 15 in their respective races and received medals for their accomplishments. In addition three of the four teams (Girls Varsity, Girls JV, and Boys JV) brought home winning team trophies. (See pictures below.) Although they didn’t win, the boys varsity team placed a very respectable 4th which gives strong hopes of the team’s returning to Great Meadows in November to compete in the Virginia State AAA XC Championship race. TJ Girls Varsity Cross Country Team Rises to the Top of N. Virginia The pre-season polls (Milestat.com and Washington Post) had the TJ Varsity girls’ team ranked 2nd in the state of Virginia and 1st in the N. Virginia Athletic Region coming into the Monroe Parker Invite. The pressure was on and WOW did the girls ever come through placing their top 5 runners in the first 16 finishers and scoring a very low 44 points, well ahead of 2nd place West Potomac’s 86 points. The race was very competitive with 23 teams and 182 runners participating. There was a lot of pushing and shoving during the first quarter mile. As a matter of fact, the race judge had to declare a false start on the first attempt to get the race underway because a couple of girls went down amidst the general starting line chaos. One of the fallen runners had to be assisted off of the course and out of the race. Now you realize why the girls still practice sprinting and do lots of pushups… it’s to survive the first half mile of a XC race. Four TJ runners took home individual medals—Lisa Junta (3), Sarah Stites (4), Stephanie Marzen (7), and Rekha Schnepf (14) —while the team collected the championship trophy. TJ Girls JV Dominates the Competition With 17 Point Victory Total TJ’s JV girls team thoroughly dominated their section of the Monroe Parker Invite with a remarkably low point total of 17. The team placed 10 runners in the top 16 finishers!! Way to go ladies!! I overheard some spectators from other area schools muttering something about TJ putting its varsity team in the JV race, but truth be told… TJ’s team is loaded with talent. TJ’s top seven JV runners took home medals: Elizabeth Ellor (1), Kate Sanders (2), Margaret Coad (3), Charlotte Sheridan (5), Nalini Singh (6), Katie Bailey (7), and Ciara Prencipe (9). TJ Girls Freshmen Team Introduced to Cross Country TJ had five freshmen girls participate in the Monroe Parker freshmen girls race in what was a very competitive introduction to N. Virginia cross country. The freshmen girls placed 11th out of 14 teams. TJ Boys Varsity Place 4th Among N. Virginia’s Elite XC Teams TJ’s Varsity boys cross country team garnered an impressive fourth place out of 30 of the top schools in N. Virginia as 255 runners vied for bragging rights and hoped to show the extent of their summer training. The hot, dry weather took its toll on a couple of TJ runners with dehydration and cramps, but the boys still managed to eke out 4th place and leave their supporters with the impression that better things lie ahead. The varsity boys were led by Jonathan Phillips who placed 12th and earned a top-15 individual medal. TJ Boys JV Score Impressive Victory With 27 Point Total TJ’s JV boys cross country team nearly duplicated the TJ JV girls performance by placing 8 runners in the top 16 finishers!! The boys dominated their section of the Monroe Parker Invite easily outpacing second place South Lakes’ 46 point total. The top seven TJ JV runners took home medals: Ned Danyliw (2), Greg Anderson (4), Sam Girvin (5), Matt Baron (7), Gordon Hart (9), Michael Kim (10), and Stephen Weischedel (11). TJ Boys Freshmen Team 6th Out of 22 Schools TJ had thirteen freshmen boys participate in the Monroe Parker freshmen boys race. The freshmen boys placed 6th out of 22 teams. The boys were led by Luke Kuprenas who placed 11th to break into the top 15.
