Program Description and Schedule:

The Certificate in Banking utilizes the American Institute of Banking (AIB) curriculum to give students a professional development opportunity by offering classes taught by banking professionals that focus on the practical applications of the banking industry. Students who successfully complete the course will receive an industry-recognized certificate. The certificate program consists of four required classes for a total of 150 contact hours (15 CEU’s). In addition, students select two from a list of topics that rotate and are augmented as interest grows, for an additional 60 contact hours (6 CEU’s. Classes are offered during evening hours after the usual banking workday to facilitate the normal work schedule of banking professionals. The courses are applicable to the UNLV Certificate in Banking as well as to various AIB diplomas through a special arrangement with the American Institute of Banking.

Core Classes: Students are required to take a core program of four required classes that consists of 150 contact hours (15 CEU’s). The courses include: Law and Banking (LB), Financial Accounting for Bankers (FA), Principles of Banking (PB), and Money and Banking (MB.),

Electives: As described above, students are required to select two elective classes to successfully complete the Certificate in Banking. Students may select topical areas that are important to them. The topics rotate and the list is augmented as interest grows, wanes or a new topic area is identified. Examples of elective courses include: Analyzing financial Statements (AFS), Commercial Lending (CL), Compliance Training (CT), Consumer Lending (ConL), Economics for Bankers (EB), and Supervision (S).

1 Student Learning Outcomes for the Certificate in Banking program

a. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to explain the different uses for various accounting tools (i.e. income statement, statement of retained earnings, balance sheet, and general ledger).

b. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to identify laws governing the banking industry.

c. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to explain the Uniform Commercial Code as it relates to the banking industry.

d. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will analyze accounting standards set forth by the Financial Accounting Standards Boards.

e. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to describe business decision cases that have affected banking accounting practices.

f. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to identify the principles and covenants of accounting practices as they apply to the banking industry.

g. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be to recognize the affects that commercial banking institutions have on the community, the economy, and the individual.

h. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to differentiate between various banking products and services (i.e. loans, investments).

i. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to list banking regulations and the agencies that regulate the banking industry.

j. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to identify the function of the Federal Reserve.

k. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to identify the role of banking as a money creator and participant in the nation’s payment mechanism.

l. By the end of the certificate in banking program the student will be able to analyze a financial statement.
