[1079-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO HONOR OUR SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAMS, THE 12 SENIORS THEY SERVE, AND THE VOLUNTEERS WHO 13 CARE FOR THEM AND TO DECLARE MARCH 2016 AS 14 “MARCH FOR MEALS MONTH” IN SOUTH CAROLINA. 15 16 Whereas, President Richard Nixon in March 1972 signed into law 17 a national nutrition program for seniors sixty years and older. 18 Appropriately, in March 2002, the Meals on Wheels Association 19 of America established the National March for Meals Campaign to 20 celebrate the importance of Older Americans Act senior nutrition 21 programs and to raise awareness about senior hunger in America; 22 and 23 24 Whereas, joining the 2016 observance of the March for Meals 25 Campaign offers an especially suitable occasion for supporting 26 senior nutrition programs that deliver vital and critical services 27 through donation, volunteer work, and the raising of awareness 28 about senior hunger; and 29 30 Whereas, in the more than four decades that senior nutrition 31 programs have benefitted South Carolina communities, volunteer 32 drivers for Meals on Wheels programs throughout this great State 33 have been the backbone of the program. These dedicated friends 34 deliver not just nutritious meals to homebound seniors and 35 individuals with disabilities but also caring, concern, and attention 36 to their welfare; and 37 38 Whereas, these volunteer services help seniors avoid premature or 39 unnecessary institutionalization and provide powerful socialization 40 opportunities for millions of seniors as they combat loneliness and 41 isolation; and 42
[1079] 3 1 Whereas, exemplifying the fine work of the Palmetto State’s senior 2 nutrition programs, the Lexington County Recreation and Aging 3 Commission Meals on Wheels Program has served its seniors 4 admirably for over forty years, offering services, including 5 delivery of more than 144,000 meals annually in Lexington 6 County, to over twelve hundred older individuals. The General 7 Assembly is grateful for the excellent work of this and all such 8 committed volunteer programs that seek to improve the nutrition 9 of South Carolina’s seniors. Now, therefore, 10 11 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 12 concurring: 13 14 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 15 resolution, honor our senior nutrition programs, the seniors they 16 serve, and the volunteers who care for them and declare March 17 2016 as “March for Meals Month” in South Carolina. 18 19 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 20 the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission Meals 21 on Wheels Program. 22 XX 23
