Kohl’s introduced the Kohl’s Cares for Kids hospital program in 2000 to reinforce our commitment to the communities we serve and to promote children’s health and educational opportunities. The Kohl’s Cares for Kids program currently supports 127 children’s hospitals nationwide.

Throughout the year Kohl’s offers special items for $5 each with 100 percent of the net profits benefiting children’s health and educational opportunities. Each year, between June and August, we work with each one of our children’s hospital partners to host a special event where we present the previous year’s Kohl’s Cares for Kids funds.

The hospital events position Kohl’s as a community partner while providing an opportunity to announce our annual contribution to the children’s hospital.

Key elements of each hospital event:  Community event showcasing the program funded through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program  Oversized check presentation with Kohl’s district manager and hospital executives  A-Team participation – Kohl’s associates volunteer their time at the event  Invite local media to attend and cover the event

Overview of process for each event:

1. Once the proposal is approved, the Kohl’s public relations team will make outreach to the hospital team to discuss event ideas and ensure the announcement is visually compelling and captivating for the local media. 2. It is the responsibility of the hospital partner to develop a release and media alert for the event (using the release and alert template provided) as well as distribute the materials and make follow up calls to local media outlets. The release is to be distributed one week prior to the event and the alert is to be distributed three days prior to the event. 3. Kohl’s public relations team needs to approve all media materials prior to distribution. 4. Kohl’s public relations team will order the oversized check for presentation. 5. The Kohl’s public relations team is responsible for making outreach to the district manager in the area and providing details about the event as well as talking points for the presentation. 6. Following the event it is the responsibility of the hospital to revise the release to the “past tense” and distribute it once again to media that did not cover the event as well as service a photo and caption from the event.

 Kohl’s PR will contact the DM and send the event summary as well as let them know the CR team will be in touch to discuss A-team participation

Event Logistics (2-3 weeks out):

 Secure a digital photographer

 Confirm local celebrity/dignitary participation

 Provide local media contact list to Kohl’s public relations team

 Kohl’s logo is available on the hospital partner web site

 Hospital public relations team develops media alert for the event

Improving hospital experience to be focus of Kohl’s, St. John’s effort; Helpful surgery information for parents and kids to be provided at enhanced pediatric waiting area

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., August 27, 2003 — St. John’s Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Department Stores today announced they have teamed up on an initiative to improve the hospital experience for children and promote pediatric surgery education through a $97,000 gift from Kohl’s through its Kohl’s Cares for Kids program.

The gift provides year-long support to the hospital’s pediatric surgical area in an effort to help kids feel more comfortable during their hospital stay. In addition to funding the continuation of ongoing projects, such as preoperative tours and brochures, the gift will fund educational items and special equipment for pediatric patients and families, as well as environmental modifications to the surgical area, including toys and kid-friendly hallway and waiting area decorations.

“St. John’s Children’s Hospital provides surgical care for about 2,100 children per year, and children facing surgery have special needs that are very different from adults,” said Richard Carlson, executive vice president for St. John’s Hospital. “St. John’s is committed to creating a unique environment that enables children and their families to better cope and understand the experience of surgery. The donation was announced today at a news conference that highlighted the ongoing enhancements to the pediatric surgical area at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. LPGA golf stars Catherine Cartwright, Stefania Croce, Leta Lindley and Carrie Roberts, in town for the State Farm Classic, made a special appearance to celebrate the announcement and emphasize the importance of improving hospital experiences for children.
