Reynolds RN MSCN Yoga has now been proven to help some of the symptoms of MS. Have you tried yoga yet? It has been proven to optimize overall health; and it has improved my MS symptoms. Attitude and exercise enhance your physical functioning in MS. Yoga helps your flexibility and balance, and is a great stress reliever. Every yoga pose can be modified and adapted for people with MS. You can even change your program from day to day, depending on how you are feeling that day. The regular practice of yoga strengthens and tones the body, improves flexibility and range of motion, enhances blood circulation, and reduces abnormally tight muscle tone (spasticity) in people with MS. It is recommended that people with MS “start low” and “go slow” when beginning an exercise program. Yoga can also relieve fatigue and pain and help you sleep better. Stress relief is one of the most important benefits of yoga. A study from Oregon Health Sciences University, published in Neurology Journal found that yoga does reduce fatigue associated with MS. The study found that yoga is as good as a traditional aerobic exercise program in improving measures of fatigue related to MS. Iyengar Yoga (a type of Hatha Yoga) is the most common type of yoga practiced in the United States. Eric Small has developed a program for yoga teachers who wish to work with MS clients. Eric was diagnosed with MS when he was in his teens. He worked with renowned yoga teacher, B.K. Iyengar, to develop a yoga teacher certification and training program for teachers who want to work with yoga students who have MS. Ashby’s Yoga is located just outside of Owensboro in Maceo, KY. Owner Lorain Ashby is certified to work with MS patients. Visit Larain’s website: www.tmaayoga.weebly.com. Zoe Sipes, owner of Bliss Yoga, was recently the speaker at an Evansville support group meeting. Zoe showed the group some breathing exercises and yoga poses that help with pelvic floor strength. She conducts classes in Viniyoga (recommended for MS patients because it is tailored for each individual), Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa I and II, Kundalini and prenatal yoga. Zoe says that “Yoga is an integrative approach to healing the body and mind through gentle, mindful movement, breathing relaxation and meditation. It is uniquely suited to healing complex mind- body issues like pelvic imbalance and chronic pain.” Many people with MS can benefit from strengthening their pelvic floor, as so many of us have urinary and bowel issues because of our MS. Bliss Yoga is located in Evansville. Visit their website at www.blissyogaevansville.com for more information. The last two times I have been to see my MS Specialist, Dr. Harold Moses, at the Vanderbilt MS clinic, he spent time telling me how important it is that we all do exercises (10 minutes per day), developing our core strength (muscles around the abdomen and trunk). He said that studies have shown that a strong core can improve your balance and prevent falls. Dr. Moses showed me, on his computer screen, many core strength exercise that can be done at home for ten minutes each day. I found a list of core strength exercises that were developed especially for people with MS by physical therapists in the U.K., who work with MS Patients. Pelvic floor muscles are also involved in stabilizing your trunk. So working on pelvic floor exercises can improve your balance and stability. If you search for ‘Core Stability Exercise Programme’ you will find www.therapistsinms.org.uk. It is a 32-page file with core exercises for people with MS. You can print the file. A search on Amazon.com helped me find several yoga books and DVDs for people with MS. Books: 1. Yoga for people with Multiple Sclerosis, Loren Fishman, MD and Eric L. Small 2. Exercises for Multiple Sclerosis: A Safe Effective Program to Fight Fatigue, Build Strength and Improve Balance by Brad Hosler, Foreword by Dr. Ben Thrower. DVDs: 1. Yoga for MS and Related Conditions 2. Dahn Yoga for MS and Similar Conditions 3. My MS Yoga with Baron Baptiste, for people with Multiple Sclerosis 4. You Can Do It, Yoga for MS Before beginning a yoga practice, you must check with your physician to make sure it is okay for you to do yoga.
