Green, Reverend C. H. Simmon, 26 Reverend Alfred Lee Peterson, Reverend Hills L. Norris, Reverend 27 Dr. William Fair, Reverend John R. Wilson (interim pastor), and 28 currently, Reverend Dr. Michael Ross; and 29 30 Whereas, under the leadership of its first pastor, the Reverend 31 Ransom Jumper, the congregation was first housed in a church 32 building formerly owned by Ebenezer Lutheran Church in the 33 2200 block of Sumter Street in the City of Columbia, and remained 34 at this location for twelve years; and 35 36 Whereas, in 1913, under the leadership of Reverend J. G. Green, 37 land was purchased in the 1900 block of Lady Street, where the 38 congregation remained until 1987 when it moved to its present 39 location on Gregg Street; and 40 41 Whereas, under the dynamic leadership of Reverend Ross, who 42 was called to pastor in 1989, the congregation celebrated the

1 [4986] 1 1 burning of its mortgage in 1994, and established a number of new 2 clubs, programs and ministries, which include: JAGS/(The 3 Brotherhood); the Nurses’ Guild; Teens Club; a newsletter (the 4 Trumpet); a scholarship fund; the new Pastor’s Aide Club; 5 Children’s Church; Girl Scouts; a radio ministry broadcast on 6 WLGO-AM; a leadership conference held annually for all leaders 7 of the church; an early morning service; a new choir, “The Voices 8 of Praise”; regional Bible study groups; an annual Church Growth 9 Institute; an annual Women’s Conference and Men’s Conference; 10 and the construction and dedication of the church’s Educational 11 Resource Center; and 12 13 Whereas, over the years New Ebenezer Baptist Church has grown 14 and toiled with the utmost dedication and care to proclaim its 15 Christian mission; and 16 17 Whereas, New Ebenezer Baptist Church has played a pivotal role 18 in the history of both Richland County and the City of Columbia 19 for many generations and today flourishes as a beacon of hope and 20 good will; and 21 22 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to 23 have the opportunity to recognize New Ebenezer Baptist Church 24 on the joyful occasion of its ninetieth anniversary. Now, therefore, 25 26 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 27 concurring: 28 29 That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina 30 recognizes and congratulates New Ebenezer Baptist Church of 31 Richland County upon the celebration of its ninetieth anniversary. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 34 the congregation of New Ebenezer Baptist Church, in the care of 35 the church’s pastor, Dr. Michael Ross. 36 ----XX----
